How We Met: Jordan and I first became friends shortly after First Year Orientation at University of Nebraska College of Law. We both admit to ‘noticing’ the other on that first day. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that I gathered enough courage to ‘friend’ him on Facebook. Not long after that we were texting all day. Much to my dismay, Jordan repeatedly turned down invitations to hang out with me and other law school friends at school events.
However, I was on my way to my first Law Prom in October of 2011 when I get a text asking me to pick him up for the dance as he had changed his mind! Needless to say, I was just a little bit excited! We hung out with friends at The Apothecary Loft before heading down to the dinner and dance (Little did I know, Jordan would later propose to me at that very place–The Apothecary Loft–a little over 3 years later). We had a great time!
The texting continued, and slowly but surely, so did Jordan’s agreements to hang out outside of the law library :) After months of hanging out and spending a lot of time together studying, tailgating taking trips to both Sioux Falls and Fremont, and work out “dates,” I was lucky enough to convince Jordan to be my boyfriend. He asked me if I “wanted to make this official” on November 4, 2012.
After we became “official,” not a lot changed except that I was falling in love with this man. We continued to study hours on end together, made trips to the gym, and tried to make the best of the hardest year of school we’d ever experienced. Although most of our time was spent at the law library, we were able to squeeze in fun things like going to our first NFL game in Minnesota to see the Packers take on the Vikings, attending weddings and family gatherings, and of course hitting up some pretty awesome Husker tailgate parties!
As the days passed, I knew one thing was for sure–I didn’t want to go through life without him. Before a friend’s wedding on June 29, 2013, we said ‘I love you’ to each other for the first time. Ever since then, I not only had found my best friend, but the man I wanted to be with for the rest of my life.
how they asked: We made plans in November 2014 to spend a weekend in Lincoln to get our Christmas shopping done and I was very excited just to head to the city we met and fell in love and to hopefully see some old friends! On December 5, 2014, we left work a little early to head to Lincoln. As many of you know, I enjoy getting my nails done. Jordan, on the other hand, may or may not think it is a waste of money.
However, he agreed to let me get my nails done when we went to Lincoln as Christmas was coming up. We got to Lincoln and Jordan dropped me off at the nail salon and I, of course, got may nails ‘sparkled’ up for Christmas! Jordan had told me his plan was to drop our dog, Millie, and our overnight bags at my sister, Danielle’s apartment. I called him when I was done getting my nails done and had to wait a good 20 minutes for Jordan to get back and pick me up! Little did I know he wasn’t really “just playing with the dog.”
We decided to head downtown to get some food and left Millie with Danielle. Old Chicago was the decision and after we (finally) found a parking spot, Jordan booked it up the street to the restaurant. He wouldn’t even stop and watch a group of dancers that were performing on the corner in the Haymarket! Apparently, Jordan’s parents were walking across the street and he was trying to keep me from seeing them there. We got to the restaurant and had a great dinner.
Jordan then brought up the idea of wine tasting! If you know me, you know I’m never one to turn this down! I didn’t know it was a stall tactic, but I guess Jordan’s ability to think on his feet and my willingness to drink wine at anytime worked out well together. We sat down with our first glass and sipped and chatted about where we were going to shop the next day.
I was a little disappointed because I was hoping to get to see some old friends while we were in Lincoln, but I had been told earlier that no one was really able to do anything. To my surprise, I got a text from my friend Megan asking to come hang out! She told me her fiance had surprised her and rented The Apothecary Loft for a ‘staycation’ and wanted to invite us!
I told her we didnt want to intrude, but would still like to see her! Jordan quickly pipped up, stating that if they invited us, it wasn’t really intruding. So we decided to meet in about 20 minutes. So, after tasting our first glass of wine, Jordan rushed me through five more glasses. Needless to say, I was a little chatty on the walk to The Apothecary!
Megan met us outside and asked Jordan to “help Dan get her bags from the car.” Not thinking anything of it, I chatted all the way up to the room. Megan had requested my coat, and I just thought she was being a great hostess ;) . We walked in and I was in the middle of commenting on the beautifully decorated Christmas tree when I noticed Dan standing there pointing a GoPro at me.
I thought he was supposed to be getting the bags? I then noticed Jordan’s cousin Ali standing in the corner with a camera. I immediately knew something was up. Megan positioned me in front of a TV screen and played a slideshow Jordan had put together. I was a mess of the happiest tears I’ve ever cried! I couldn’t believe it was happening!
After the video, Megan told me to turn around and there was the man of my dreams, tears in his eyes, waiting for me across the room. I walked over to him and hugged and sobbed in his arms. I was so happy! Eventually (he was waiting for family and friends to file out of the back room) he said, “I told you it would be on a random day!” He began to kneel down and asked if I “wanted to make it official” and asked me to marry him.
I exclaimed “of course!” He had the most beautiful ring picked out and I shook as he put it on my finger. It wasn’t until then I noticed Millie came running up to us. It didn’t even dawn on me how the dog got there but I picked her up and began petting her. Jordan told me I should maybe turn around and to my GREAT surprise, both of our families and lots of our closest friends all began applauding! What a great surprise!
We spent the night visiting and taking pictures with all of those that came to witness the best night of our lives. I even had a later surprise when some of my closest girlfriends from Sioux Falls arrived! We got to show them around downtown and hit up a few of the new bars in the Railyard just down the street from The Apothecary Loft. I’m not quite sure how he managed to pull off such a huge surprise without anyone tipping me off, but as my sisters said, it probably helped that I am somewhat of a gullible person :)
It truly was the best night ever and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with Jordan!
