Julianne and Thomas
How We Met
November 25th, 2017 I sat at my kitchen table in a small town outside of Toronto, Canada and had my first FaceTime date with this sweet, stud of a man from Berlin, Germany. Thomas and I met online on November 18th, 2017, started talking, and in January he visited Canada for 2 weeks.
We quickly realized that the 2 weeks together was simply not enough time. So, I quit my job, packed my bags and booked my one-way ticket to Germany. It was by far the best decision I have ever made. I have now been in Germany for three months and am living happily with my husband… That’s right, husband! Ok, let me back-track a little bit and get to the point of this submission.
how they asked
On Thursday, March 22nd, 2018 (I thought) my sister and I were going to be heading to Toronto for a nice, quiet sister’s date before my departure to Germany on the 23rd. My sister, being the organized woman that she is, had the whole evening planned out. She told me that we were going to meet my step-mom at Nathan Phillips Square for a coffee before going out for dinner.
When Thomas was in Toronto in January, he and I explored the city and Nathan Philips Square was a spot that we enjoyed together. When my sister and I got to the Square, I started to talk to her about the time Thomas and I spent there and how he taught me how to dance right by the skating rink. At this point, she was rushing around and, I thought, hardly listening to me in her search for our “step-mom”. She then stopped me at the big, lit-up “Toronto” sign and asked me to teach her the dance that Thomas taught me… I was a little confused by this but I did as my older sister suggested and her and I started to waltz, quite poorly might I add. As my sister and I are awkwardly waltzing around, I saw this handsome stud in a suit and tie jump down from the Toronto sign – it was my sweet Thomas!!
His wonderful friend from Germany and my amazing brother-in-law then popped out … as you can imagine – TOTAL SHOCK!! I stood there with my mouth wide open, stumbling over my words and said, “What the heck are you doing here?! Are we still going to Berlin tomorrow?!” Thomas nodded his head, took my hand, danced a few steps with me, got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. Of course, I said YES!!!!
Thomas had this planned since January. He involved all the right people – my family, his family and a few friends. I still can’t believe that no one cracked! He told me that he would be in a very long appointment the day before I left – little did I know, that “appointment” was sitting in an airplane with his friend for 11 hours to fly to Canada to get me! I’m in awe of this man and his amazing, kind spirit. I’m in awe of him, who he is, and that he chose me to be his wife.
As of today, June 22nd, 2018, I have officially been Thomas’s wife for 4 weeks. Marriage in Germany is a bit different than in North America. Everyone must get married at the ‘City Office’ first and then you can have your typical ‘North American – white wedding dress’ Wedding. Most people do that the next day but Thomas and I have decided to wait until my family from Canada can be here. So, on August 18th, 2018 with my family from Canada here in Germany, we will have our wedding ceremony at a fairy tale spot over-looking his hometown. What an amazing journey this has been so far – I can’t wait to see what else is in store.
