Sarah and Joshua

How We Met

I have a good friend, Andy, who I regularly catch up with over drinks. I had been declining his invitations lately as I had been training for Chicago Marathon and didn’t have a lot of free time (nor was I drinking during training). It was a week after race day on a Sunday when he asked if I wanted to come out for a drink. I didn’t really have an excuse so I agreed to meet him. Just as I was getting ready to leave my apartment, he texted me to let me know he was with his friend Josh. I said it wasn’t a big deal and I’d be there soon. Little did I know my life would change for the better that night. I can clearly recall staring at Josh and thinking to myself that there was just something about it. I was hooked. Luckily for me, Josh had asked Andy for my number a day later and before I knew it we were on the last first date of our lives.

Side note: I didn’t know this until after we had been dating awhile, but apparently we were supposed to meet at Andy’s wedding a few months earlier. I couldn’t attend the wedding.

how they asked

(We live in a neighborhood in Minneapolis called the North Loop).

Josh worked with a reporter from the local newspaper who pretended he was doing a story on young couples in the North Loop and falling in love.

The reporter sent me a tweet asking if we’d like to be part of the story. I took the bait and said we’d love to help. He then sent a series of emails outlining the story, the date, and the interview process letting us know there would also be a video component for their website. So a video crew showed up to our loft and followed us around to film us on a typical Saturday afternoon. We then went across the street to a venue called ARIA for the sit-down video interview to discuss our favorite date spots, how we met, things we love to do in the North Loop, etc. During the interview, the reporter pretended he got a text from his mom and had to answer it so he left the room (camera still rolling). It was then that Josh told me the story wasn’t real; that he set up the whole thing. He got down on one knee and proposed to me. (I said yes, duh!) Needless to say, I was a little upset he lied to me (and that there wasn’t really a story), but I got over it quickly. We spent the evening in a limo stopping at our favorite places: the bar that we first met at and the restaurant where we had our first date. I was completely clueless and wouldn’t have had it any other way.
