How We Met
Around 8 years ago, I got asked to start playing bass guitar at our church for the student ministry services. Even though I was young, unprepared, and so nervous I said yes. I walked in to meet the rest of the band, and one of those people was a drummer named J.D.! The boy behind the drums with the long hair quickly became a close friend, and we stayed that way for years! It’s so crazy to think that guy will soon be my husband!
Ever since we met, we had always been friends and kept in touch, even when he went away to college in Tennessee . He would still come back to Ohio to visit and we would play music together occasionally on the weekends.
Fast forward a few years, and he got offered a job at the church and moved here full time. I started to see him a lot more, but it wasn’t until December of 2013 when playing 10+ Christmas services together that we started to see each other as more than friends. He was much different than anyone else I had been with, mostly because we built our dating relationship off of a very solid friendship. He pursued me and was very clear with his intentions. One of our first “dates” was on New Years Eve and we streamed the countdown from Disney to watch together. At that time, I had no idea that only 2 years and 9 months later Disneyland would be where he proposed. :)
Over the years, we’ve went on so many adventures, and have just fallen more in love everyday! He truly is my best friend and it’s still hard to believe I get to marry him.

We had planned a trip to San Diego for his friend’s wedding. While planning the trip, we realized Disneyland was only an hour and a half away!! We have both always loved Disney and have been to Disney World in Florida many times, but never Disneyland in California. So we bought the tickets and were both so excited! He had also purchased a photo pass, which I didn’t even know was an option! There are photographers all around the park that take your photos, that can later be downloaded on the app. I thought it was just a way to remember the day by, but he had other plans. :) We arrived to the park, and it was decorated for Halloween which was so GREAT!
We had fun all day riding rides, eating churros, and just enjoying time together at the most magical place on Earth. We passed by the castle a few times and he kept making excuses for why he didn’t want to get our picture taken there yet (which was understandable-it was so sunny for most of the day!) Around 6 I told him we better get our castle pictures before the sun goes down. We headed over and got our pictures taken and I was just looking forward to seeing them. But just as our photographer said we were all set, John said something about wanting to take one more and I saw him reach into his back pocket. My heart felt like it was going to explode because 1. I am so shy and I could feel about 10,000 eyeballs staring at me and 2. Was this really about to happen?! With tears in his eyes he said “Megan Jean Gorey, you are the love of my life. Will you marry me?”
ALL OF THE TEARS but it was so sweet and perfect and I’m still in disbelief it really happened!
He didn’t tell the photographer ahead of time what he was planning to do, but lucky for us she was able to quickly grab her camera and get all these awesome shots! Lots of people around us were all cheering and saying congrats to us and it was so sweet!! Shortly after standing there in disbelief that we were finally engaged, a Disney staff member approached us and gave us some cute engagement pins! She also asked if we wanted to sit in the VIP section for the parade, which was so fun! Such a great way to continue the awesome night.
Every girl dreams of the perfect proposal, and I feel so blessed mine happened the way it did. It makes me even more happy to spend the rest of my life with this amazing man!
