How We Met

My brother introduced us one summer, when we went on a camping beach trip in Outer Banks. We talked a few times that trip, but it wasn’t until a few months later when I visited Virginia Tech that I started to fall for him. We continued to text and Skype every day, but I went to a small college in Michigan for my first semester, and he was 8 hours away in Virginia. The long distance was hard, but it gave us a time to really get to know each other.

I ended up transferring, for multiple reasons, to Radford University (30 minutes away from Virginia Tech) for the rest of my education. We now saw each other every weekend, and he really was as perfect as I thought. We made so many memories throughout college, and now that we are both graduated, we share an apartment and continue our memories throughout our adult life and could not be happier. We have officially been dating for three years, this New Year’s Eve!

It started with chaos at the airport, when our original flight was cancelled, then re-assigned, then delayed. We were a bit stressed trying to get to our destination for the holidays, but finally arrived Christmas Eve morning at 2:30 am. My whole family traveled to visit my brother in Burlington, Vermont for Christmas, and all knew about this little secret!

We had reservations Christmas Eve night, for a fancy dinner downtown. I thought nothing of it because I knew it was a special occasion, and this was the first time we have all been together since May (Joe and I’s college graduation). Our plans were to go walk around downtown and look at the cute little shops to pass time before dinner. We were walking up the street and someone suggested to take pictures with the christmas tree. My parents were first, then my oldest brother and his girlfriend, and then it was Joe and I’s turn. At this point, I still had no idea because I thought it was just festive photos for Christmas.

He asked my brother if he could take one more picture, and then looked at me and got down on one knee. He held up a beautiful ring and asked if I would marry him! Of course I said YES!

My family was all there to come running towards us with hugs and kisses and welcome the newest addition to our family. We are so blessed with love and look forward to the new year and the next chapter of our lives together. Thank you to my brother who captured all these wonderful moments for us!
