How We Met

Blake and I crossed paths for 11 years before we finally met. We went to the same college in Ithaca, and we remember attending tons of the same parties, concerts and school events. After graduation we both moved to NYC, where our lives continued to intersect. We even figured out that he was at my 23rd birthday party!

Despite having tons of friends in common, it took the help of OkCupid for us to finally meet in October 2013. After dating for only 2 weeks, we made the relationship official, just in time to celebrate our birthdays together (yup – our birthdays are one single day apart!)

how they asked

After our third date, Blake was certain that he and I would be married someday. Knowing that I work in the wedding industry (running The Bach), he realized that I had probably heard every possible proposal story, so he wanted to find a way to be extra romantic and really surprise me. So he sat down, right after our third date, and wrote me a letter explaining how quickly he knew that I was the girl he was going to marry. Blake put the letter in an envelope and mailed it to himself, so he could have it postmarked and prove to me that he knew all along. He saved that sealed envelope, which had the postmark date of November 11, 2013, for about two years.

Fast forward to August 2015. Blake knew he wanted the proposal to be a surprise, and being the expert planner that he is, Blake planted a few seeds in my head to throw me off entirely. First, weeks before he proposed, he casually mentioned that he wanted to buy a letter opener because he always ruins mail when opening up envelopes. Unbeknownst to me, he wanted one to make sure the envelope was opened cleanly, preserving the ever-so-important postmark. Several days later he mentioned that he has tons of old jeans in his closet that he hadn’t worn in years.

On the night of the proposal while getting ready, he told me that he was going to break out one of the old pairs of jeans to wear out to dinner and “give them some airtime”. I didn’t think anything of it. When we got off the subway and started walking toward the restaurant, we passed a Staples. Blake saw the store, appeared to have an epiphany, and had us quickly run in and grab the letter opener that he said he had been wanting. Again, I didn’t anything of it since he’d previously mentioned that he wanted one. That, and buying a letter opener right before a nice dinner was very normal “Blake behavior”.

Once we had ordered a few cocktails, Blake began shimmying around in his seat and said, “What is this in my back pocket?” while pulling out the envelope. Appearing to study it, he exclaimed, “No way!!! This thing was postmarked in November 2013!! I must have been wearing these jeans when I got my mail, stuffed this envelope into my back pocket and forgot to open it!!!.”

He then grabbed the letter opener, and said, “well this is convenient – I have a letter opener right here!” I just laughed, having no idea what was about to happen.

After opening the envelope, he read the first line, “Joanne” and gave me the letter, saying it looks like it was for me.

I started reading the letter and began tearing up the second I realized what was happening. At the end of the letter Blake wrote, “If you are reading this right now, it means I was right, and that I bought a ring and am about to propose.” I looked up and he was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen.
