How We Met
Andreas and I met on Royal Caribbean’s Brilliance of the Seas in 2018; he, a bridge officer and I, a dancer. We’ve both worked for Royal Caribbean for 10 years but never crossed paths. On my first day onboard the cruise ship we had mandatory safety training. I was completely exhausted from the travel and moving all my things on board that as soon as Andreas started his lecture, I fell asleep. Needless to say, we were not off to a good start, but over many extra meetings, training, and time. Andreas finally asked Joanna “Do you like Key Lime Pie?” Key West was a frequented port on Brilliance of the Seas, so I hopped off the ship and brought back dessert for our first date.
Because Andreas is from Sweden and I am from America, we knew the rough seas ahead but as things progressed over time our relationship grew stronger. I was sick in the hospital, Andreas was there, I was a performer in a circus and he came to visit. He was sailing in Europe and I was with him. In February 2020, we bother we’re able to secure jobs with Royal Caribbean corporate in Miami. We were so looking forward to waking up to each other every day, but alas, COVID19 came and hit us hard. Andreas found himself stuck in Sweden due to travel bans and I was in America. As soon as my work stopped, I took (what happened to be) the last flight into Sweden before the borders closed. We’ve been living in Stockholm since March 2020 and couldn’t be happier! Andreas continues to work remote and I just received my Swedish residency visa so even though our plans are turned upside down we are now, together, engaged and happier than ever!
How They Asked
We’ve had plans to go to a hotel, Mauritzberg near Söderköping, Sweden for a long time. It’s an old castle they turned into a hotel and of course, 1/2 off because of the corona. Once we got there and were walking around the grounds, and found a small secluded bench near the water.
We started talking about how crazy it is that I have been living in Stockholm for 3 months and thank god Sweden extended my visa, and even though this was not our plan, I’m so happy to be here.
Then Andreas checked his pockets, said: “Do I have it?” And I responded with “What, the room key?” Then he got down on one knee and I literally have no idea what he said, I think I partially blacked out, Andreas had to continually tell me “This is really happening!” then I said “YES!” and then, there was a ring on my finger.
Honestly, I had NO CLUE it was going happen. He has always said we would wait until we got back to Miami and had our apartment and jobs back and but nope, huge surprise, it happened now and we couldn’t be happier.
