Jessie and Jacob

How We Met

Jake and I met on Birthright during our first Shabbat in Israel almost seven years ago. We were both students at Binghamton University and went through BU Hillel but since he was a few years older, we didn’t meet until we were sitting on the roof of the Shalom hotel in Jerusalem.

I thought he was cute so I went over to say hi. I complimented his watch and we started chatting about music and school. I liked him from the first minute we started talking. (Some photos of us in Israel…)

how they asked

As far as I knew, we were just killing time before dinner with friends by visiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on the evening of March 18. Jake suggested that we listen to an audio tour that his colleague’s husband had recorded. Little did I know that I was listening to a script Jake had written on his own (voiced by a friend), with piano interludes between each painting that Jake had played and recorded himself. Each painting the tour had us stop at had something to do with our relationship in one way or another. When we got to the final painting, the audio tour instructed us to close our eyes for a few moments and then to open them.

When I did, Jake was down on one knee and he asked me to marry him.

I was so ecstatic, I couldn’t believe it was real! After I said yes, we spent about an hour going around the museum taking photos with my favorite paintings and sculptures, I was totally floating on air.

Where to Propose in The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, New York

Just when I thought I’d seen it all, he told me he had arranged dinner with his parents, my mom and her boyfriend. I was so excited to run into their arms! As we pulled up to the Louie & Chan on the Lower East Side, Jake took my hand and said, “This will have been the last lie I’ve ever told you.” I walk in to exclaims of “MAZEL TOV!” and immediately start hysterically crying (see video here:

Jake had arranged for my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins to travel from Florida and New Jersey to come and surprise me at dinner. My brother, a professional tennis player, was even Facetimed on an iPad to be a part of the moment as he was traveling from Florida to Mexico for tournaments. We had an absolutely incredible dinner and shared our story with our families, since they only knew that we were getting engaged but didn’t know how! The whole day and night was an absolute dream.
