Jessica and Ricky

How We Met

Ricky and I met as sophomores in college in 2013 at Ball State University. He had already attended there as a freshman, but I was a new transfer. I was introduced to Ricky and his group of friends through my roommate, Alison. This was our first photo ever taken together. From the start, we were a close-knit group of friends and we spent time together almost every day. The guys would even take naps in our dorm room between classes because their apartment was too far away (see photo). For the most part, we hung out in group settings, but eventually, Ricky and I would hang out alone more and more. We would grab food or shoot around some basketballs at the recreation center. We ended up spending a lot of time together. In March of 2014, while just sitting around in my dorm room before we were about to grab lunch, Ricky asked me to be his girlfriend.

Jessica's Proposal in Chicago, IL

How They Asked

On January 9th, 2020, Ricky planned for us to spend the day in Chicago (one of our favorite cities in the entire world!). It was a pretty cold day and we were going to walk around to take some photos. I’m a photographer so this is one of my favorite things to do! His plan was for us to get a nice photo by Buckingham Fountain, and bless his heart, he didn’t know that the fountain is shut off during the winter. So we kept on walking, and a stroller through this beautiful garden, but there wasn’t anyone around to take our photo. I suggested we head over by the lake since this is one of my favorite spots in the city and has great views! Ricky ran over and stopped two girls walking by to see if they would take our photo (and whispered to them his plan!).

Where to Propose in Chicago, IL

They cheerily agreed and when he walked back over to me to pose for our photo, he planted a kiss on me, told me he loved me, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him! Even though in those moments leading up to the proposal I had a feeling this might be happening, I was shocked and at a complete loss for words! I think I was eventually able to speak up and say YES! to be the best friends in the entire world!
