Jessica and Joseph
How We Met
Joseph and I met the old-fashioned Italian way, our parents set us up! More specifically, though, my mom bugged me about him relentlessly for almost a year! We’re both from Montreal, Canada, but Joseph’s dad is from Montallegro, Sicily. How funny, my mom happens to be from a Sicilian family from the exact same town! Our dads are musicians and are in a band together which is how our families got to know each other over the past few years.
One year before Joseph and I finally did meet, we attended the same show our dads were in, but on different days. Joseph did introduce himself to my parents, though. From that day until the day he and I were finally able to meet, my parents constantly reminded me about this interesting guy, just my type, the same age as me (we are 5 days apart!) and who they said would be absolutely perfect for me. My first reaction was “No thank you, we don’t live in a perfect world, it won’t happen!” but my mom said, “You never know, just add him on Facebook!” Unfortunately, I never did add him, “Why should I, he doesn’t even know who I am?” On the other hand, he knew exactly who I was. He’d checked out my profile immediately after my mom insisted he had to meet her daughter!
Fast forward one year, our dads had a Halloween party gig. My parents seemed so excited and couldn’t wait for this party. Why? Because Joseph and I were finally going to be at the same place at the same time! Oh, and I was told Joseph was coming only because he knew I was going to be there! Anyways, my mom introduces me to him. Funnily enough, we were seated at the same table… and then Joseph decided to sit right next to me! He stole my mom’s seat, told her he needed it because he wanted to sit next to the beautiful girl haha! We spoke all night long, made jokes, laughed, had drinks together, and danced with our families. It felt like we’d been friends for years. When the night ended and we had to say goodbye, Joseph hugged me and told me “I’ll see you very soon!” We spoke the very next day! It didn’t take very long at all, Joseph asked me out on a date just 3 days later!
I won’t forget the joy in my parents’ faces when I told them I was going out for dinner with Joseph that next weekend. I had no idea where he was taking me, but I couldn’t wait to see him again! I’d been thinking about him ever since the party. The first thing he told me when he picked me up was “Hey Wonder Woman!” after my Halloween costume. He took me to my favorite Italian restaurant in Little Italy, Montreal.
Since that first date, we have been inseparable! I can truly say he’s made the happiest woman on earth and that I finally found the missing piece to my puzzle!
How They Asked
I never thought I’d ever get married, even though it was always my dream to find my soulmate and live happily ever after!
On our first date, Joseph told me “I’m going to marry you in two years!” I laughed and said “Yeah right, how are you so sure?”, but it turns out he was so, so right! As a joke, he asked me what kind of engagement ring I wanted. I laughed and told him I wanted a princess cut!
Fast forward to May 2019, Joseph had to leave for two weeks for a business trip in Europe. It was the first time he and I were ever apart more than 48 hours at a time! He asked me what I wanted to do when he came back. I told him I wanted to relax at home because he would be so jetlagged, but he refused. He wanted to go out for dinner in Old Montreal (my favorite neighborhood in the city!) I was so excited and gladly agreed! I had no idea that the dinner date would change my life forever!
The day after he arrived back in Montreal, I was so excited for him to come, pick me up because I was going to surprise him with “Welcome Home” balloons. I didn’t expect an even bigger surprise in store! As I was getting ready for our date, my mom told me to dress up, wear fancier shoes and do my hair. I was confused, “We’re going to be walking around the Old Port, I need comfy shoes and it’s so hot outside, I want to keep my hair tied!” Luckily, I listened to her.
Once we arrived, Joseph took an eternity to find parking, as is usual for him, yet seemed so calm and easygoing about it, which is really not like him at all! I didn’t think much of it because I was so excited to finally be with him again after two weeks apart. I couldn’t wait for our date and suggested we walk so I could show him my favorite spot (the LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana located on St-Jacques St. in Old Montreal). As a matter of fact, I’d been dying to show him this sculpture and had been pestering him about it for months.
We started walking around 7pm, and oddly, Joseph was texting the whole time. I jokingly asked him which girlfriend he was texting tonight! Once we came reached the end of the waterfront, he told me “All right, are you ready to show me this famous sculpture of yours?” I said yes, super excited and we started walking towards it! Once we arrived, I was jumping for joy, and I started lecturing him about the artist and the whole story behind the sculpture. I never could have imagined what would happen next!
Joseph started talking to me about how much he loved me, how much I meant to him, and how I had changed his life. He asked me if I remembered what he told me on our first date. I was so confused because I wanted him to listen to me talk about the LOVE sculpture haha, I still didn’t realize what was happening! I noticed flashing camera lights and told him to move out of the way because tourists were trying to take pictures of the sculpture. That’s when he took my hand and got on one knee. Even then, I still didn’t realize it, I was so sure he was tying his shoes!
Joseph got on one knee at my favorite spot in the whole city and asked me to marry him with these exact words “Jessica, will you marry me? Yes or No? Look at the ring, it’s a princess cut how you like it!” It was such a Joseph way to ask! I said yes to my best friend in a heartbeat!
That’s the moment my life changed forever! I was speechless, I couldn’t believe I was now an engaged woman, and to such a wonderful, caring man! Those flashing camera lights were the photographer Joseph hired to capture our special moment, that’s who he was texting during that whole walk over! Our parents immediately called us and congratulated us. I couldn’t wait to get home to show them my new ring, even though Joseph had already shown them months before.
We went around Old Montreal with the photographer and did an engagement shoot, and finished the evening celebrating and have a drink with her. Once we got in the car, I realized we had forgotten to have dinner like we (or I) had originally planned. Joseph surprised me one more time! He took me to that restaurant in Little Italy where we had our first date.
Once we got home, I was surprised by our parents and siblings, who prepared a proposal party for us with cake, champagne, balloons, and flowers. I was so excited to share this joy with my family and with my soon-to-be-husband’s family. I couldn’t believe the first thing Joseph did upon returning from Europe was the plan all this with my parents. This was the most amazing, most special day of my life, and so much better than I had ever dreamed!
I still can’t believe how right my mom was about Joseph! He truly is the perfect man for me, my soulmate, and I am forever grateful! I am so excited for this next chapter of our lives as we become husband and wife. I can truly say I’ve found my happily ever after!
