how they asked: Cameron and I met at a volunteer project making Christmas cards for terminally ill children on December 14, 2013 at the Cameron Village Library. As soon as he walked into the room, I definitely took notice and motioned for him to come sit with my mother and I. Cameron came over and sat down, we made small talk throughout our few hours of making Christmas cards and as the end of the project drew to a close my mom whispered in my ear that she was going to the bathroom and I better have shared my phone number with him before she returned, lets just say we were both pretty impressed with him. Cameron and I had exchanged phone numbers and that was that. The very next day, I got a text message asking if I would like to go out for drinks and get to know each other a little more. We both agreed to meet up the following Saturday for our very first date night, lets just say the rest has been a fairy tale.
Cameron and I have a tradition to have at least one fancy date night a month, to kind of break up our normal routine date nights and splurge. July 31, 2015 was one of those. We dressed up and took me out to dinner, someplace we had never been before. We ended up at 18 Seaboard, a fancy restaurant in downtown Raleigh, by far the best service I think I’ve ever had! It was perfect! We ordered a bottle of champagne to celebrate ourevening out and our meals were absolutely delicious! We spent a few hours just talking and enjoying each others company. Before our desserts had arrived, Cameron told me that he had a surprise for me after we left dinner. Of course I asked what it was and tried to get some information out of him, he declined my questions and told me I had to wait patiently to find out where we were going. As soon as we got in the car, he asked me to close my eyes and pinky promise I wouldn’t open them until he said I could. I agreed and we drove off to our ‘secret destination’. Once we arrived, he helped me out of the car, holding on to him for dear life with my eyes still closed, we walked for what seemed like forever, the whole time I was asking if he was taking me to get a new puppy and if we were at the SPCA and started naming local pet rescue places. I could hear him smiling through his answers as he kept telling me, ‘you’ll just have to wait and see’. Finally we got to where we needed to be and Cameron reached out in front of me and grabbed both of my hands. “You can open your eyes now” he said, I opened my eyes and couldn’t take them off of him. He looked so nervous, almost like a little boy on Christmas morning, waiting to open his gifts, I had never seen this look before and my stomach got butterflies. He asked me if I knew where we were, I looked to my right and saw the Cameron Village Library, I responded with “back to where we met”. He pulled out an envelope from his vest pocket, which read ‘classified’ on the front. He opened it and pulled out an exact replica of the very artistic Santa card he made back on that rainy day we volunteered in December.
He opened it and read me a beautiful poem about all our adventures and inside jokes we have made along the way, the last line reading ” Then I want nothing more than for you to be my wife”. He got down on one knee and asked me if I would be his wife, for the rest of our lives. I managed to say yes between the tears and he put the most gorgeous ring on my ring finger. He stood up and wrapped his arms around me and we both just stood there for what seemed like an hour holding each other, I whispered in his ear asking if he had remembered to ask my parents, he pulled back and motioned across the street, he said “I did, and they’re actually right over there”. I saw my parents and a few of my best friends making their way over to us. Tears just kept rolling down my face and I couldn’t have been more happy in my entire life at that exact moment. We all celebrated right afterwards at the Cameron Bar and Grill for champagne toasts and cupcakes. The entire night was perfect! I’m still on cloud 9 and I am so eternally grateful that I get to pend the rest of my life with my best friend.
