How We Met
We met in the little outback town of Roxby downs, south Australia in July of 2019. I was working as an au pair for a family that worked in the mines, and Jessy was working as a transmission linesman doing FIFO work. It was Friday night and the mother of the family that I was working for took me out to bogan bingo night at the pub with all of her girlfriends. That same night Jessy went to the pub with his workmates. They didn’t have tickets so they weren’t allowed to come into bogan bingo unless they made a donation.
And so they did just that. It wasn’t long before our two parties began to mingle and it was quickly discovered that there were two of us with the same name and we were the same age. Girl Jesse met boy Jessy. We hit it off and spent the night getting to know eachother, dancing and singing along to the music. At the end of the night, boy Jessy lent me his jacket, walked me home, and asked if he could take me on a proper date the next day. I honestly thought he was joking or that he wouldn’t remember, but sure enough the next day he rang me, made a plan, picked me up, and took me out on our first dinner date at the pub in the opal mining town of Andamooka.
How They Asked
On Tuesday, December 13th, 2022 my partner Jessy took me out for a lovely dinner overlooking the sea at steamers in Wollongong, NSW. When we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess told us that we had reserved the table where everyone gets engaged at. This of course made me smile and it definitely made my partner, Jessy, blush and look very nervous. Truth be told I had thought that he may have been planning to propose to me at this dinner. He had been acting very nervous and was eminent that we needed to go out to dinner tonight. Earlier that day he had even gone for a haircut and asked me to iron his clothes (not things he would normally worry about before a date). Thus I had dressed up for the occasion, hoping that tonight would be the night.
The host seated at a small table with a beautiful view of the ocean, close to the guitarist preparing for his set this evening. He told us again about how this was the engagement table, but also how one time it went terribly wrong here where the man planned a beautiful proposal, and as soon as the woman walked in and saw she immediately said no and left. We were definitely taken aback by such a story at the beginning of our dinner. It had definitely set a strange mood. The host came back again and apologized and brought up champagne and wished us luck in what our night may bring. We laughed and made a joke of it all. I teased Jessy a bit about when he was going to pop the question, and he laughed along with me. After a three-course dinner and some lovely acoustic covers, it was still early in the night.
I asked Jessy if he would like to go out for a walk along the beach, and he said he thought of another place to walk and would call us an uber. At this point, I figured that tonight was not the night and had let the idea fade away. We arrived at fairy meadow beach, and I saw a sign that said that it was a dog beach. I thought that this was a bit odd and wondered why he had wanted to walk on this beach. Jessy told me that he reckoned we could walk on this beach all the way back to Wollongong surf and leisure resort, where we were staying with our 18-month-old daughter and my mother. As we walked onto the beach, we took off our shoes. In the distance, I could see a beautiful picnic set up. I honestly didn’t think anything of it until I spotted a photographer hiding in the sand dunes taking photos of us. I was in shock. I couldn’t believe it.
I realized that this was set up for us! With the biggest smile across his face, Jessy took my hand and led me to the picnic set up. There were candles lit, with flowers and chocolates across a table in front of a picturesque frame, surrounded by cushions and blankets draped across the sand. Jessy got down on one knee, told me he loved me, and that he wanted to thank me for being the rock of our family through the good times and the tough times. He asked me to marry him and of course, I said yes! He stood up, and within the tightest embrace, we kissed. This moment was one that would stay in my heart forever. Unbelievably the surprises did not end there. Jessy had arranged for my mother to bring our daughter to meet us on the beach for a family celebration I felt like the luckiest woman in the world to be surrounded by so much love.
