Jeri and Cody
How We Met
We met unexpectedly thru a mutual friend while I was settling in to live in Missouri after going to school there for 4 years. I was only home visiting for a weekend to get some things, and I went out with some hometown friends where Cody had become a “regular” with my group. We were beer pong partners, he made a behind-the-back shot, and the rest is history. We started our relationship with 8 months long distance, and then I moved back home to be with him.
how they asked
He told me WEEKS in advance about how his boss had reserved the loft area of a nice local restaurant for his department Christmas party. I thought “wow, what a cool boss!” My parents came up from Florida retirement earlier than normal for their Christmas visit, but I thought “maybe airline tickets were cheaper then.” My sister-in-law invited me to get my nails done with her for the first time ever, but I thought “how nice to have some ‘sister time’ before the craziness of the holidays!” He told me he wanted to finish his masters degree before getting engaged, and I thought “okay, you’re worth the wait.” I had inherited some diamond earrings that I wanted in my engagement ring, and they were still in my drawer, so, why would I see it coming? We walked up the stairs to the restaurant loft, and his hand was shaking uncontrollably. I just thought he had some social anxiety about meeting up with his co-workers. As we got to the top of the staircase, I began to recognize ~45 of our closest family and friends waiting for his surprise proposal to me.
I was completely blind-sided and ugly cried so badly. There were friends from Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, even Pennsylvania! When he got down on one knee, I didn’t even hear him ask me because everyone was cheering so loudly. It wasn’t until about 2 minutes later he finally remembered to give me the ring! I asked him why he didn’t use my diamonds (because I had just checked my drawer the week prior), and he told me that I needed to look closer at the earrings in my drawer. He put DECOY diamonds in my drawer to fool me! Let me tell you – it worked. I had absolutely no clue what he was up to, and I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect story.
