How We Met
Steven and I first met at Blossom Music Center where we both worked at First Aid. In all honesty, it was not love at first sight. I would actually refer to him as the grumpy old guy at work. Eventually, over time we realized we were more alike than we could have ever imagined, and started meeting outside of work. We would meet at the park and go for walks while getting to know one another.
One day while we were saying our goodbyes I said something ridiculously silly, he laughed and looked at me with the most genuine and happy smile and I knew that I was the reason for his happiness. At that very moment I thought to myself I could spend the rest of my life is the reason behind that smile. So it may not have been love at first sight, but I know the exact moment I fell in love with him.
How They Asked
We are not your average couple. There is a 10 year age gap between the two of us. I was previously married and Steven has never been married or engaged. My first marriage proposal was less than memorable. I knew this time around I wanted things to be different, special and unique just like our relationship.
That’s how I got the idea to propose to Steven myself. I could make the moment memorable, fun, exciting, and something special for him. Steven is a huge Cleveland Browns fan and had never been down on the field at First Energy Stadium, so I decided that was where I wanted to ask him. So for weeks, I had secretly been planning on proposing to him at the Cleveland Browns vs Cincinnati Bengals game on Sunday 12/8. It was actually my birthday that day and he was taking me to the game to celebrate.
I assumed that he would not expect me to plan something for him on my birthday, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to surprise him. I had reached out to his season ticket representative and together we orchestrated a “fake email” so that Steven thought he was randomly selected to get his picture taken down on the field after the game. I had to come up with a plan B and C in case he didn’t see the email or thought it was spam.
The Cleveland Browns often have promotional things like this for season ticket holders so this was easy to believe. I ordered a custom ring from Manly Bands and had it engraved. You should hear the story of how I got a ring stuck on his finger one night while he was asleep trying to secretly figure out his ring size because you cannot just ask a man what size ring he wears.
I had our youngest son Weston’s one year photo taken and printed by Kendrah Damis Photography with a Cleveland Browns theme. I also purchased a football and painted “he said yes” along with the date on it. Lastly, I secretly invited all of our friends to meet us downtown for dinner to celebrate after the game. It was so much fun being on this side of the proposal. I could barely contain my excitement and almost ruined the surprise many times.
