How We Met
I first met Lucas at summer orientation in June before our freshman year at Trine University. We happened to be in the same orientation group, but I was more focused on trying to make friends with some of my soon-to-be roommates! When we started school in August, Lucas happened to be in a few of my classes, but it wasn’t until sophomore year that we became friends. Since Trine is such a small school and we are both chemical engineering majors, we ended up in almost all the same classes starting sophomore year. It was at this point, when we were grouped together for a lab class, when our friendship really started to blossom. At the conclusion of one late night study session, he asked me if I “wanted to do something other than homework.” We went on our first date a week and a half later. Fast forward two years and we both are about to graduate and can’t wait to start this new chapter together!
how they asked
It was the Saturday before Easter and Lucas and I had gone back to my parents house to celebrate the holiday. One of my good friends, Brittany, was also home for the weekend and met up with Lucas and I for lunch. We decided to go to a pizza place that is right near one of the beautiful beaches of Southwest Michigan.
Since it was such a gorgeous day, Brittany suggested that we go for a walk on the beach/pier. As we started our walk down the south pier, Lucas suggested we get a picture with the newly refinished lighthouse in the background. I thought nothing of any of this since it was such a beautiful day and we didn’t have a picture with the lighthouse which is a very iconic image in my hometown.
What I thought was just a regular picture turned into an amazing proposal. I had no idea that he had a ring in his other hand!
As we reached an open spot on the pier, Lucas asked Brittany to take the picture of us with his phone. We walked to the edge of the pier and posed for what I thought was a normal picture. I was so oblivious I didn’t even realize his goofy face and ring box in his opposite hand! I even started walking back towards Brittany so we could continue on our walk. It was at this point that Lucas pulled me back towards him. He started telling me how much he loved me and how he had known for a while that I was the one for him. It was at this point that I finally caught on to what was going on and about at this point that he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him!
After I managed to say “yes” through my shock, tears and joy, Lucas laid out everything he had planned over the past few months. As it turns out, he had been planning the whole thing with Brittany for months so that he could catch the whole thing on camera! He managed to include some of my favorite things about home, to make this day as special as he could! Everything about that moment was perfect and I can’t wait to marry the man of my dreams!
