Jennifer and Josh
How We Met
Josh and I were both single parents of boys, when we stumbled across each others profiles on match.com. Josh had been a member for a few months, but I had just joined, literally the day before we started messaging. (we like to joke that I bought a three month membership, and only needed it for 24 hours!) We set up our first date within the week, and I was terribly nervous. After all, I hadn’t been on a ‘first date’ in over 14 years! All that went away within minutes, as conversation came so easily. Soon, an hour and a half had passed, and it was time to leave the restaurant, to make it to the movie. We hugged good night after the movie, and Josh said the typical, “We should do this again sometime, I’ll get a hold of you.” I truly had no idea whether I’d hear from him or not, but I got a text from him just 8 hours later, and we quickly made plans to see each other again. We were inseparable from then on, and with each date, we found more and more crazy ‘coincidences’ and things in common. We learned that we had been born in the same hospital, delivered by the same doctor, in a small town nowhere near where we had met. Our parents knew many of the same people; I had worked with his mom at a retail store years before; we lived blocks apart in another town in college, and the list goes on and on! Most importantly, we were both raising boys alone, after marriages that had ended for very similar reasons. We were meant to be, and everyone around us knew it, too!
how they asked
On October 9, 2015 (just shy of two years together), Josh and I had made plans to get away for the day, and take a lunch riverboat cruise in Stillwater, Minnesota. I thought that Josh had been acting a bit strange in the days leading up to it, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up. I had spent the previous day with his mom and sister, and they seemed clueless, even intentionally saying things to throw me off, as I later learned! But the riverboat cruise came and went, and Josh was acting pretty normally, so I was a little bit disappointed when it was over. We started to walk towards downtown Stillwater, and Josh was insisting on walking along the river, when I really wanted to be checking out the shops! I was a little annoyed that Josh was walking very quickly, practically dragging me by the hand, then he suddenly led us up onto a grassy area. “What’s this?”, he innocently asked, as a saw a beautifully decorated table, with flowers, candles, champagne, and a cake. I truly thought we had stumbled onto someone ELSE’S private moment, and just wanted to get out of there! Then I got closer and noticed the ‘J & J’ on the heart-shaped cake, and I knew. Josh immediately got on his knee, and gave me the most romantic and heartfelt speech, ending with the big question. Through my tears, I said, “Of course I will!” Then his mom, sister, and niece came out of their hiding place, behind some bushes, and I learned that they had driven there to set everything up while we were on the cruise! I also learned that Josh and his sister had made the drive there a couple of weeks before, to scope out the perfect spot. I also learned that plans had changed several times, due to crowds of people in his originally planned places, and that he and his sister had exchanged several secret texts while we were on the cruise! I was overwhelmed by how much thought Josh had put into this special day. My ring was absolutely perfect, the one I had dreamed about for months, and it turned out to be the most wonderful weekend!
