How We Met
Derek and I met on an online dating website called “Coffee Meets Bagel.” We both share the mutual feeling of online dating: we didn’t want to do it. We were encouraged by friends to give it a shot. We both chose Coffee Meets Bagel because it was free and easy to navigate. Plus, we didn’t have to fill out pages of information about our lives.
We were connected Labor Day weekend 2014. I still remember the day as if it was yesterday. I had been at my little brother’s (Ricky Fischer) wedding. That night, I checked my phone and noticed I had a connection. I was very excited to see it was my “bagel” from Tuesday night. Derek’s profile had caught my interest not only because of our similar interests, but because he considered himself a Christ follower. I wasn’t really sure what he looked like because he chose to upload photos that mostly consisted of him wearing sunglasses. Our “icebreaker” question on the app was: ” Do you speak any other languages?” I replied, ” If you count the few words in know in Spanish, sure!” Derek said, ” Same here, but in Italian,” Intrigued, I asked him to tell me something in Italian. He Replied, “Sei Bella” which means “You are beautiful.” I was immediately smitten and I turned blush.
Less than a week later, on May 30, 2014, we went on our first date. We met in Pasadena at King’s Row, and ended with frozen yogurt at 21 Choices. It has been over 2 years of non stop adventures and I cannot wait to see what the Lord has in store for our lives as we continue this everlasting adventure together!
how they asked
You know those engagements you see on TV or on You Tube that you dream of, but never expect to happen? That engagement happened to me. On November 6, 2016, Derek and I were headed to the home of our dear friends Nick and Kelly. We were going to have a “Friends-giving.” Nothing was suspicious because it was common for us to go to their house for a BBQ or dinner with friends. I was completely oblivious to what was going on, although it was odd that Nick had moved his car for us to park in their driveway. When we walked inside, it was very quiet. A little too quiet. Kelly opened the doors to the backyard and there, standing in front of me, with cameras and phones, were some of our dearest friends, including our parents.
After staring for about 2 seconds, I realized this was about to become one of the biggest moments of our life so far. I also started crying the second I saw my parents. I followed the rose petals and candles to a chair that was placed in front of a TV.
Click on the link below to watch what I watched at that moment. Derek created an entire video based on the “Most important run of his life” He recruited our closest friends to be a part of the video in two ways: 1. They submitted videos of themselves or their kids saying ” Just. Say. Yes!!” or they were a part of the run. The video shows them running through the streets of Santa Monica in order to spell ” MARRY ME?” on the Map My Run GPS app using Go Pros to capture every part of the run.
Our friend Job Hall edited the entire video and it is definitely my favorite video to watch! It makes me cry every time!
After 6 minutes of laughing, tears, and more laughing, Derek got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!
We are so thankful for all of our friends and family that helped make our engagement such a memorable occasion!
