How We Met
I was a junior at St. Bonaventure University and he was a grad student. There was a local bar everyone went to that Dan happened to be a part-time bouncer at. I walked into the bar and of course, noticed how cute he was. Being in for a few minutes, I realized I left something at my house across the street and needed to run home quick. Making sure there wouldn’t be an issue with me leaving and returning due to the busyness of the bar, I let him know I was already in but I’ll be right back. He said “sure, but it will be $5 re-entry” as his attempt to flirt with me. I turned to him, looked him in the eyes and said a not so very nice phrase… and walked out of the bar. Once I did return, I mentioned to my friend who knew him that I thought he was cute. She immediately dragged me back to the door to introduce us and from that moment, it was an immediate connection. We chatted all night when he could until the bar closed. I said goodbye and left wishing he had asked me for my phone number. 20 minutes later I got a text that said “hey it’s Dan from The Burton. Your friend gave me your number.” From then on, there was never a doubt in my mind that I could see myself spending the rest of my life with him.
How They Asked
Dan and I had a date night planned for June 7th 2019. We talked about going to a nice park area I had wanted to go to, the Japanese gardens in Buffalo, NY, and having a little picnic before heading over to dinner across the street. We walked down this long path to get to the Japanese Gardens and as we turned a bend, he wanted to show me inside the pond there were always fish swimming around. We walked over to the edge to look into the pond, as he noticed the backpack with all of our stuff in it was leaking on his back… or so he led me to believe. He went down to open the bag to “check” and that’s when he turned to face me and dropped his knee. The first things that came out of my mouth were “this isn’t real, this isn’t real, this isn’t real.” He asked, and I immediately said yes!
As I’m sobbing, wiping tears from my face I hear a voice behind me say “well, good thing someone was here to take a picture of it.” His brother had been holding this spot Dan had planned to do it, and was hiding in a bush for a solid hour waiting for us and had captured the moment! Once we called our families and went to dinner, we went to a brewery downtown where his brother asked us to go meet him and his wife for a drink. As I walked in and scanned the room, I saw balloons and all our friends crowded around a table for yet another surprise! It was everything I ever could have dreamed of!
