How We Met

Brennen and I met in middle school, but were never really in the same crowd. We both were on the swim team, but even then we never really spent any time together. During our junior year of high school in 2008, I asked Brennen to be my date to the Sadie Hawkins dance. It turned out, he had a girlfriend attending a different school at the time-needless to say, we did not go to the dance together. I think that was the first and last time that I made any attempt to spend time outside of school with the water polo and swim star of Sierra High School.

After high school, we didn’t speak or keep up with each other’s lives other than remaining friends on Facebook. I moved to San Diego, and a year later he did too. He joined the Marines and I continued with my education. We never crossed paths until November 14, 2013-four and a half years after our high school graduation. On that Thursday, Brennen asked me if I would be his date to the Marine Corps Ball the very next day. For some unexplained reason, I said yes. We had a wonderful evening together at the ball, and we have pretty much been inseparable since.

Fast forward three years-through grad school, a year of long distance, and a move across the state of California, and we are still growing together and we are still smiling. I am so thankful that he said no to being my date to the dance in high school, and that I said yes to being his date to the dance after college. Timing has to be just right for these once in a lifetime sort of things. And when you find that sweet spot, its pretty amazing the way things work out. I am so thankful that he is mine and that I am his, forever.

how they asked

Over the course of the last year, my love for photography has inspired me to style a photoshoot for the two of us and our sweet black lab, Bear, during each of the different seasons. About two months ago, I spoke with our favorite photographer and came up with a plan for fall pictures in an orchard in our hometown. Little did I know, Brennen had bigger plans.

About halfway through our photoshoot, the photographer positioned us and went to get set up for the shot. He told Brennen that he had some dirt on his pants, so Brennen bent down to brush it off, or so I thought. I was looking at Jason, our photographer, waiting for my next instruction and next thing I knew, Brennen was on one knee.

Everything I have ever hoped for, everything I have ever needed, was on one knee in front of me asking me to spend my life with him.

I was, and still am, in awe. I wish I had the words to express the joy my heart feels that I get to spend my life with this man. For 1,122 days, it was always, always yes.
