How We Met
Last October 2015, I made the biggest decision of my life (at that time) and moved from Manila, Philippines to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to pursue my career as a Finance professional. Life was tough for me back then – homesickness really hit me hard. But, God always find a way and He led me to a group of people whom eventually became my “second family”.
Von was part of that group.
Our friendship started when I became an officer in our church (he is also an officer). We spent most of the time together during church activities. We were constantly pigging out with our friends. As time passed by, majority of our closest friends went back to our home country for good, leaving Von and I in the group.
Our closeness caught people’s attention and they started teasing us and asking us if we are “officially together”. I was consistently telling them that there will never be an “us” because he was just my best friend then.
By December 2016, I noticed that he became sweet to me and actually treated me as a lady. He was asking me out on a date every week; watching movies and TV series that I’d like to see; trying as much restaurants in Abu Dhabi as we can; throwing little surprises for me; making me happy EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would fall in love with my best friend. Von became my boyfriend officially last 8th July 2017. The rest is history.
how they asked
Weeks before our 1st anniversary as a couple, I was asking him about his plans on how we are going to celebrate it. Few days before our anniversary, he told me that he arranged a day tour in an island in Abu Dhabi and requested me to bring summer clothes. A day before that trip, my father inadvertently asked me if I called him because he got a ‘missed call’ from an overseas number. Later that night, he confirmed that it was Von who tried to call him but didn’t say anything on what they had talked about. I got crazy butterflies in my stomach! As much as I didn’t want to ruin the moment, I couldn’t contain the thought that he might propose on that day and he just called and asked the blessings of my parents.
Finally, the longest night of my life had ended!
Our day tour was perfect. Von, being the most thoughtful boyfriend of all time, gave me rash guard, sunscreen lotion, and, of course, GoPro to complete our mini getaway. We had our sumptuous and delicious food while enjoying the romantic and scenic view of the island resort. However, intermittently during the day, I was expecting for the ‘pop-up question’ and the thought of it gave me mixed feelings of joy, excitement and nervousness. Whenever he was coming from somewhere making phone calls or doing restroom stuff, I was secretly checking his bag for some hint of ring box or the ring itself but unfortunately, nothing was peeking out.
The sun was about to go down when Von gave me a box. My heart was pounding really fast! When I opened the box, I saw the love letters that he gave to me over the last 12 months. Von asked me to read them again so that I can be reminded on how he really loves and appreciates me. The love letters were romantic and sweet but there was no ring inside the box and no proposal happened. I was a little bit disappointed and sad but I just kept it with myself and smiled to him and hugged him.
We were about to go home when Von called one resort staff and asked her to take pictures of us. This time, I felt OKAY and convinced myself to enjoy the remaining time with him on the beautiful island resort. We went into a breakwater resembling as mini cliff where we could watch the sunset. From there, we were seeing the amazing view of some parts of Arabian Gulf. After few snapshots, Von gave me an envelope and asked to turn my back and open it.
I was confused… Inside the envelope were the same letters he just gave me a while ago but this time, the first word of each love letter was highlighted. I was trembling and crying while reading those first words: “CAN YOU MAKE ME THE HAPPIEST PERSON ON EARTH RIGHT NOW, MARRY ME?”
He told me that he already knew that I’m the one whom he wants to spend his lifetime with, thus, planning the proposal from the very start of our relationship. He then asked me to turn around and face him – he was kneeling down on his knees with a box of my dream engagement ring and finally asked me THE question.
We were both crying with so much joy and happiness. I said, “Syempre, yes!” while dancing and screaming my heart out!
