How We Met
Derek and I met during our internship on Alcatraz. We were working for a non-profit called Concrete Preservation Institute, so we spent the summer preforming concrete repair work around the island and exploring every part of it. Throughout all our adventures we quickly fell in love on The Rock.
We spent the next three years finishing school and beginning our careers. Derek went back to work on Alcatraz full time and we visited any chance we got. One of our favorite memories was watching the 4th of July fireworks from the top of the lighthouse. So when it came time to propose there was only one option for him and he pulled it off perfectly!
how they asked
The first time I met Derek, he had a burger in each hand and a mouth full of beer. It was definitely not love at first sight. The second time I met Derek was on the top of the Lighthouse on Alcatraz Island. I knew then, there was something magnificent about this adventurous soul. From there on, Alcatraz Island became our special place and the Lighthouse was even more special in our hearts.
I got a call a week before the special day from the President of Concrete Preservation Institute, asking if I could come out to the island to take photos for a marketing piece. I agreed, of course! But then Derek asked if he could tag along. I didn’t think anything about it at the time, but when we arrived on the island Ranger John was there to take us to the top of the Lighthouse for a “photo shoot”. When on top, our photographer took photos of me individually and then asked for Derek to join me. We took a few photos and then he turned back and got down on one knee. After a very dramatic pause (what seemed like forever), he spoke those four words every girl dreams of! I said yes immediately, knowing I get to marry my very favorite adventurer!
