Janine and Matthew
How We Met
Matt and I met 8 years ago. He was 18 and I was 16. We both grew up in the same neighborhood, but we never crossed paths. In the summer of 2008, we just so happened to work at a summer camp together. At the time, I was too young to really know what I was doing, so we talked for two days and he conveniently asked me to be his girlfriend over text. I said yes and the rest is history!
how they asked
About a year ago, Matt and I started talking about engagement. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, but timing is something that has constantly been inconvenient for the both of us. I was in college at Bloomsburg, and he was just starting Law School in the fall at Rutgers. We both wanted to get engaged, but we knew we had to wait a little bit longer. And anyone who knows me, knows how impatient I am, so this past year was a tough one! In May, I graduated from college, and I was super excited to be able to move back home just so I could see Matt all of the time. I thought an engagement could be coming, but I knew not to get my hopes up.
Fast forward to August, when I had no idea my life was about to change. Two weeks prior, Matt told me to make sure I had no plans for August 7th, because he wanted to surprise me for my birthday coming up. Not thinking anything, I bought a dress and waited. Sunday morning, he starts driving and I have no idea where he’s taking me! We show up at the train station and I realize we are headed for New York City! He knows how much I love the city, but I still had no idea what was about to happen. When we arrive, he takes me to the Highline, which is absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite places to go.
He’s being more quiet than usual, and even secretly texting (which he does NOT do!!!), so I started to wonder if something was up. Next thing I know, I run into my mom, who conveniently told me she was doing laundry just 20 minutes before! As soon as I see my dad, I realize what is happening and I start freaking out! He pulls me to the side, my parents take our their cameras, and he starts telling me a whole of mushy words that I barely remember since I was crying so much. He gets down on one knee, and asks me to marry him! Of course I say yes through the tears, while staring at such a beautiful ring!
The surprises didn’t stop there! He had made reservations for a restaurant on the Upper East Side for lunch afterwards! I’ve never been so happy, and I so thankful he asked my parents to be there to witness such a huge moment in my life! I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this amazing man!
