How We Met
I met Gustavo in December of 2010 when I had just entered Roselle Catholic High School as a freshman. We both played soccer and I caught his eye during soccer practice which we had at the same time in the field outside our high school. Although I hadn’t noticed him, he messaged me on Facebook. I ignored his message but he persisted.
We ended up exchanging numbers and texting and getting to know each other all during our winter break. I remember thinking we had so much in common! We had been texting on New Year’s Eve as I was having a party at my house. When the clock struck midnight, I had a message on my phone from Gustavo asking if I would be his girlfriend. I agreed and the rest is history!
how they asked
It was Cinco de Mayo and the only thing on my mind was making plans for the night ahead. Earlier in the week, my brother had asked if he could photo shoot Gustavo and me, which is common for him to do. My brother mentioned that the cherry blossoms had come out so we should take pictures on Saturday at the park. Since it was still early in the day, I agreed to it. We went to a park near my house and had a great time taking pictures.
Then, my brother suggested we go to our old high school to take photos in a gazebo they had out front. We got to our high school and my brother began to take pictures of me in the garden. Then, Gustavo said he needed to use the bathroom and was going to check if he could go inside the school. My brother kept me distracted with photos until Gustavo texted us saying to come inside because some of our old teachers were there. My brother and I walked into our high school and the first thing I noticed was how dark it was. As we turned the corner, I saw an aisle of rose petals and my high school sweetheart on one knee at the end of it. I got chills as I saw him in the hallway where I had my first locker and where one of our teachers had given us her blessing during my Freshman year of high school. Tears came to my eyes as I saw a chalkboard that read, “My high school sweetheart since the first day I met you I knew you were the one!”
The tears began to roll down my cheeks even more when I saw a table decorated with our old yearbooks, a bear we made at Build-a-Bear when I was 15, and photographs of us through the years.
I walked down the aisle to a heart built from rose petals where the love of my life asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Saying “yes” was the easiest decision I ever made. After we shared a hug and a kiss, our families came out of their “hiding places” to celebrate with us! Proposing in the place where our love began was the most romantic proposal I could have imagined.
