How We Met
On April 11th, 2015 my life changed after I suffered a traumatic brain injury resulting in a coma and paralysis on the right side of my body due to brain stem damage. On April 11th, 2018 I stayed back from Whistler to celebrate a birthday party with one of my best friends, Reggie Clark, whose birthday happens to be April 11th, my rebirth day. Shortly after the party that year, Reggie and I started dating. We continued dating, bought a house, and climbed multiple alternate peaks together, one of which was completely reconstructing our house, from a full charge in electricity, subfloors, and a torn-down kitchen.
How They Asked
We talked about marriage and I told Reggie I wanted to get engaged on April 11th. On April 11th, 2015 my life changed in the blink of an eye. I wanted my new chapter of life with Reggie to start on the same day. Also, of course, my Alive to Thrive day is Reggie’s birthday. So it just seemed like the most amazing, corny, fabulous thing to get engaged that day. Reggie told me he wanted to take me ski touring, and we had a photographer for my Alive to Thrive day and his birthday. I had an idea maybe Reggie would propose, but I wasn’t 100% sure.
I knew I needed to climb that peak though. We started on iced-up snow, then boot-packed over the melted trail, slid onto our faces, yet kept climbing. We got to the crest and looked at amazing views, but there was still more to climb. We reached the summit and posed for the photographer for our day.
After that pic, I looked over to Reggie and he was on one knee. Even though I suspected this was coming, my dream was coming true! So I started to cry. Reggie proposed to me at the mountain peak. We put in the work and climbed this peak that mirrors our past and future. We put in work together to watch our dreams come true.
