Jaimie and Taylor
How We Met
Taylor and I met for the first time in January of 2010 at one of our church’s annual youth retreats. I immediately started crushing.. hard. He was friendly, loved Jesus and had some impressively long, Justin Bieber-esque hair.
That following summer, we began hanging out with mutual friends. I never once thought anything would come of our friendship. We went to different high schools and only ever saw each other at church. However, God had other plans. On July 12th 2010, Taylor asked me (in the middle of a movie!!) to be his girlfriend and I’ve been the happiest girl ever since. We’ve grown so much since we fell in love at sixteen, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!
how they asked
Throughout our almost seven years of dating, we experienced high school graduation, one year of dating long distance and three years at the same college. And with so many changes in our lives, it’s nice to have a constant retreat to look forward to – Taylor’s family’s farm. We visit the farm often for holidays, birthdays and relaxing weekends away from the craziness of life. So, when Taylor’s Dad sent out a group text saying we’d be celebrating Taylor’s grandmother’s birthday at the farm in a few weeks, I was excited! I even thought to myself that this place would be a great proposal spot (2 family weddings have happened here!!), but everyone had convinced me that ‘it’ wouldn’t happen for a while.
Little did I know, this was all a part of Taylor’s plan. He spent weeks visiting the farm, planning with a photographer, meeting with my family, and alerting friends very carefully (I’ll admit I have incredible social media creeping skills) of the surprise he was planning. The plan was to go out to eat Saturday night for his grandma’s birthday dinner in the little town of Giddings, TX, minutes from the farm. I got my nails done the week before with my mom and sisters and a few days before the big weekend came I packed a cute new romper to wear to dinner. We arrived at the farm Saturday morning to sunshine and clear skies. As the day went on I grew a little curious as to why Taylor was glancing at his watch every five minutes. I suggested taking a walk around the property, which we did… and he barely talked the whole time! Taylor sat with me as I put make up on for dinner, and every time I glanced up he was smiling at me. Still… I was clueless, I thought he was just being sweet. Finally, I was ready. Taylor asked me to help him with something and led me outside. I immediately saw a table set up near the water.
He led me to it as I repeatedly asked “is this really happening?! Does my hair look okay? It’s so windy!!” He spread out a blanket and showed me what he had packed in a wooden crate – letters from each of our parents and certain pictures and symbols representing our relationship and favorite memories together. After reading the letter from my Dad, I couldn’t stop crying to clearly read the rest.
He began telling me how thankful he was that God brought us together and how much he loved me, and our relationship. Through my happy tears, I saw him get down on one knee and ask me to marry him and be his girl forever!!! I said yes a million times and took my promise ring off so he could slip the most beautiful engagement ring on my finger – it was perfect and exactly what I had always dreamed of.
We hugged briefly before he told me to wait a second, because we weren’t the only ones celebrating. He picked up the shotgun from behind the table and fired two rounds into the air. This was his cue to everyone waiting at the gates of the farm that I said, “Yes” and they could complete the surprise. Car after car drove up the dirt road to the house, and I couldn’t believe my eyes!
My family, the rest of his family, our sweet puppy Maple, my friends and Taylor’s friends all made the drive to The Middle of Nowhere, TX to spend the night celebrating with us.
We spent the night eating, drinking, sharing lots of laughs, tears and stories with everyone. I’m so thankful for everyone who helped make this happen – especially my future husband! It was such a special day that we both will never forget.
