Jaime and Brett
How we met: I was an assistant teacher in introductory course at my alma mater. Brett was a student in the class. When he walked into the room for the first day, I had a strange thought when I saw him, “that could be my husband.” The feeling that accompanied the thought was very intense, but I buried it away, along with the thought, in order to maintain professional boundaries.
Throughout the course, we had limited interaction and what interaction we did have was on a purely academic level. When the course ended, we went our separate ways.
Months later, I had a dream about him…and in the dream we were in love. It was a magical dream and I woke up feeling inspired and alive. I couldn’t bury the feeling any longer, that same intense feeling I had when I first saw him. A few days later, I had the same dream and I woke up with the same feeling, which by this point was growing in intensity with each dream. However, I was feeling these intense feelings for someone I had only known casually and hadn’t seen in months. I was exhilarated…and confused.
The Monday of the next week, in the middle of the busy workday, I had a visitor to my office. It was him…”just stopping by to say hello.” So, to make this long story short, that was over 5 years ago and we have been together, in love, every since, and now we are getting married!!!
How he proposed: It was the day of our good friends’ wedding… so my mind was focused on that, which was very clever of Brett. He told me that before the wedding he wanted to stop by one of our favorite places, the Meditation Gardens in Encinitas, CA, which happened to be only minutes from the wedding venue. These Gardens have always been special to Brett and I, since it is where I first met his family and where we have spent many special moments. But, since we try to visit there as often as we can, I didn’t think it was unusual to visit there that day.
We walked hand-in-hand through the flowers and trees and he asked me where my favorite spot was in the gardens. I took him to the area with a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean… it was a sunny, clear day, so the view was spectacular. I was staring out at the ocean waves, mesmerized by the rhythm, when Brett twirled me around towards him and got down on one knee. He said, “this is where you first met my family, and now you are a part of my family, will you marry me?” I said, “Yes.”
