How We Met
Jacob and I met on the popular dating app, Coffee Meets Bagel, back in October of 2017. Both of us were not having much success and admittedly had deleted the app several times, but on the night of October 6th, 2017, the “stars aligned” and we were matched. As we started talking and getting to know each other, I could tell that there was something different about Jacob and I was definitely intrigued to know more. When he asked me out, of course, I said yes, but I didn’t really know what to expect and I tried my best not to get my hopes up. Our first date surpassed my expectations, to say the least. We met up at a boba & coffee house and ended up talking for 6 hours! The coffee house employees had to kick us out at the closing time! Conversation with Jacob was so natural, I felt like I could be myself and I could tell him anything. We talked about everything and anything; serious topics like faith, family and our passions to planning our second date at Disneyland! Yes, I basically asked him out on a second date by saying we should go to Disneyland sometime! I guess I really liked him, and let’s be honest I was super nervous! The following pictures are just a small glimpse of the memories and adventures we have shared since we started dating and up until our engagement. On December 31st, 2017, Jacob told me he was falling in love with me. I knew in my heart that I was falling so hard for him as well. In April of 2018, he gave me a promise ring and our conversation about marriage become more of “when” instead of “if.” In June 2018, I knew without a doubt in my mind that I would marry Jacob and in July 2018, he bought a ring while I was serving overseas in Turkey for two weeks. We give God all the glory for our relationship! It truly was His orchestrating and we owe it all to Him for growing us and teaching us to love and serve eachother more and more every day. We can’t wait to get married and start the new adventure of marriage together!

How They Asked
It started out like any other Sunday, rushing to get out the door in time for church. I didn’t put much thought into my outfit and I ran my fingers through my messy curls in hopes that they would cooperate enough to “appear” styled. I skipped steps in my makeup routine and yelled downstairs to Jacob – “CAN YOU MAKE ME A BAGEL REAL QUICK?!”, because, priorities right? But instead of a loving “Yes, dear” which is what I was expecting, I heard “No, let’s go out for breakfast after church.” Hmmm, okay. I was hoping my tummy would stay quiet through the church. We walk out the door and instead of taking my car that’s 10 feet away, we walk the extra mile to Jacob’s parked truck…why? Because Jacob insists. We are for sure going to be late now. I don’t think much of it and hop into the truck. As we merge onto the freeway, Jacob starts talking to me about our first date and the boba shop we went to.
We laugh as we reminisce and out of the corner of my eye, I recognize we are passing the exact location, I shout quickly, “WAIT! BABE! IT’S RIGHT THERE!! REMEMBER?!” Before I can finish my sentence, we’re pulling into the parking lot. I start to panic. Wait! We’re already so late for church! What’s going on? Jacob smiles and says, “I have different plans for today.” My mind is RACING now. What is going on? Plans? What??…”We’re going to have a bae day, that’s all,” he says. He’s so calm and reassuring that I believe him and I deny that anything crazy is going on. We park and as I go to get out of the truck, he hands me a letter. It says “PART 1.” Part 1? “BABE, WHAT IS GOING ON?! How many parts are there?!” He smiles and tells me there are eight letters. Woah! A small piece of me began to think about a proposal coming, but the majority of me was regretting my outfit choice and lack of care for my hair and face! I was indeed a hot mess! But then his big blue eyes pierced my soul and I felt like the most beautiful woman in the entire world without him saying a single word. I mentioned my hair and he dismissed my toxic thoughts – “You look absolutely gorgeous, honey.” OK, FINE.
My silly worries melted away. We walked up to the storefront and a hundred flashbacks came rushing back to my memory. The way I felt when I first laid eyes on Jacob. The butterflies. The attraction. The desire to know more about him. We reminisced further about what we ordered and then we ordered for ourselves and found the table where we sat on our first date. Looking at Jacob now, I just felt so in awe of how far we had come and how a Coffee Meets Bagel match ended up becoming the love of my life. I know that God had His hand in every part of our love story, there’s just no other explanation. I opened the letter labeled “PART 1” and was instantly filled with so much joy. In the letter, Jacob recalled all the details of our first date, including the color of my clothes, my makeup, and his first impressions of me. The letter ended, but I knew the adventure he had planned for today was far from over. When we pulled into the Downtown Disney parking lot next, it made sense because we had our second date at Disneyland!
I had mentioned to Jacob during our first date that I had a Disney Annual Pass and that we should go sometime (not thinking he would take it too seriously) — But then he said Yeahhh! When are you free? This weekend? I was so surprised that he was serious too and I’m so glad that he follows through on his word. We had such a magical day on that second date and we both fell harder for each other. When we got into the Downtown Disney, we decided to get Canna-Bites from Wetzel’s Pretzels. The same treat we always share together whenever we go to Disney. The warm, gooey, cinnamon goodness brought back all the memories. I opened the second letter labeled “PART 2.” As I read the letter, I couldn’t help but just permeate with insurmountable joy! Still trying to figure out how it’s possible to be so in love with someone. Just looking at Jacob made me smile.
Nothing could be better at that moment than just being with him. I didn’t think the day could get much better than this, but again I was mistaken. When our Downtown Disney adventure came to an end, we headed to the next “surprise location.” He took me to the East Lake Village where we spent a portion of our third date. It was a beautiful, sunny day, so we decided to sit on the grass next to the lake and play our game of “I Spy” that we always play whenever we go there. Jacob totally schooled me, as always! I loved just sitting between his legs and leaning back on his chest, watching the sun hit the lake and the ducks swimming by. I opened the third letter labeled “PART 3.” This time, tears began to fill my eyes. As before, he recalls the details effortlessly of that day. He closes with this, “There are so many places we have with fond memories, I wish I could take you everywhere where we have been.
But I am so grateful that I have a lifetime to take you where we have yet to go.” Now, the pieces are falling together. I think I’m onto him. According to Jacob, we had one more stop to make and then we could go home and get ready for dinner (which meant I could dress nice and fix my hair, Yay!). When we ended up at the next stop, I was confused because I had never been there before. We parked in a really nice neighborhood with mansion homes. I expected it to be another place where we had been before and made memories, but Jacob just smiled and said that this was a new place that he had been wanting to take me to for a while. We made a trek down the dirt path and when we got to the bottom, it opened up into a small yet secluded redwood forest. It was so breathtakingly beautiful!
I even joked about how it would be amazing to get married there! We took our time walking through the marked trail and reveling at the beautiful wood giants. As we continued to walk, the trail ended and Jacob handed me a letter that said “PART 4.” Except when he handed it to me, he said: “this is the last letter.” WAIT, WHAT? You said there were 8! Full panic! He encouraged me to read the letter and walk with him.
Here is someplace new. The day is 02-24-19. I have no idea what you’ll be wearing as I’m writing this, but I know for certain that you are absolutely gorgeous! I’m sure you’ve got a pretty good idea of what’s happening, I just have a few things to tell you before I get to the point…
You are the love of my life.
You have drawn me closer to Jesus and I hope that I have done the same for you.
I have loved every moment with you since we met.
There is no one else I could possibly want to spend the rest of my life with.
You are so incredibly beautiful.
You are so kind.
You are so gentle and loving.
You are so caring.
You are my best friend and lover.
You are the one I want to spend forever with.
The only thing I have left to do is to ask you something…
I am BAWLING at this point. We then walk into an open space and off in the distance I can see twinkle lights hanging in between the redwoods. There’s a small white table with our picture on it and something else I can’t quite see from afar. I hear rustling in the bushes and then two of my best friends, Cristophe and Angie come into view — they’re capturing the whole thing on video and with pictures. I feel so overwhelmed. Is this real? Am I dreaming? This surely is a fairytale. Jacob and I take it all in and then he leads me to the table. There are countdown blocks that say “Days to Mr & Mrs” and a small black box. He gets on one knee…
“Jacquelyn Marie, will you marry me?”
“Yes, I will!” I squeak through tears of pure joy and awe.
Stop 1 and 2, at the place we first met and Downtown Disney.
<< I still didn’t know he was going to propose at this point
Mr & Mrs. Jacob Tomes coming soon…
