How We Met
We are a modern day success story (or cliche?) – we met on Tinder! Nick had just gotten stationed at the local Navy base and I’d returned from a weekend away with friends who had convinced me to download the app and start dating again. We started talking on a Sunday and had our first date that Thursday!
How They Asked
The week prior, my parents had asked if we all wanted to go for a family hike at Calvert Cliffs State Park. That morning we brought our two dogs and met up with my parents, sister, and nieces. It was 90 something degrees (with high humidity) and we decided to take the longer trail knowing we’d be rewarded with the beach at the end of the hike. Nick walked ahead with my dad and older niece while I stayed at the back of the pack with my mom, sister, and carrying my 2 year old niece on my shoulders. Near the end of the trail there is a bridge that overlooks a marsh and you can see the bay up ahead. We stopped to take a break and my 7 year old niece handed me a card that read “Auntie Jacquie, Me and Evee would love love for Nick to be our uncle. Love Gwen and Evee.” I turned around and Nick was on one knee. He proposed with his Great-Grandmother’s ring that his sister had passed down to him for me. We celebrated for a few minutes and called Nick’s family up in Maine (he hadn’t told his mom he was proposing that day so it was a surprise for her too) before finishing the hike to the beach. On the beach I found the second part of the surprise. Nick had arranged for my best friend to come into town to celebrate with us. She’d taken the shorter trail to the beach and brought champagne for celebrating.
