How We Met
Phil and I both grew up in Staten Island. He grew up in Richmond town, I grew up in Prince’s Bay. However, we both went to the same elementary school. We attended St. Patrick’s in Richmond town so I guess you can say we’ve known each other for a while. We actually “dated” in the 7th grade, but I don’t think we were ready for commitment are 11 years old.
We always remained friends but life took us our separate ways. He went to Monsigner Farrell high school and I went to St. Joseph by the Sea. We always had the same circle of friends growing up but nothing came of it. I went away to college and he started working right out of high school. He is a longshoreman on the pier in Staten Island and I’m a fashion wardrobe stylist.
As years went by, life brought us back together through mutual friends. We started hanging out more and more, became best friends again and we’ve been together ever since. We started dating the end of summer 2013 and we’ve been together since.
how they asked
We have been living together for 2 out of the 3 years we’ve been dating and it’s been nothing sort of amazing. For the proposal… I had not even the slightest clue what was about to happen. We’ve always wanted to go sky diving together- but we never booked it.
Phil began to look for rings for me(which I also had no idea) and he took it upon himself to book skydiving for us shortly after. I obviously did not disagree because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do with him. We’ve both never been. Saturday, September 10th we woke up and headed to Skydive New Jersey.
We were both pretty nervous, but I’m assuming it was worse for Phil since he had to jump out of a plane AND propose all in one day. Phil let everyone at the skydive place know what was happening. So, being so nervous, I insisted I jump first(which obviously wasn’t part of his plan). Since everyone knew what was about to happen, they pulled my parachute quicker than usual to keep me up there longer and get Phil to the ground first. As I began to get closer to landing, I saw Phil standing there in an open field with “Will you marry me” written on his shirt.
I could not even believe it. I was just happy to get my feet on the ground and to see the man of my dreams waiting for me was the most amazing feeling in the world.
He popped the question and all I did was scream. I was shocked, excited and completely surprised.
The 2 guys who we jumped with had the whole thing on video and they took pictures as he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.
Needless to say it was the best day of my life. I got to knock skydiving off my bucket list while doing it with my best friend and get engaged. It was a pretty successful day.
