How We Met
Travis and I met through Tinder in November of 2015. We texted for a couple of weeks before we decided to meet in person. I was 18 and he was 20 at the time. I was an Au Pair living in Wilmette, IL and he was a student in Kenosha, WI. He was home for Christmas break when we met and he suggested he would pick me up and we could watch a movie at his house. To be honest, I was a little freaked out because I have seen way too many dateline episodes and I didn’t know if he was a creep! Turned out to be the best night. We just clicked. We officially started dating on March 14th of 2016!
How They Asked
Travis and I checked out a few rings just for fun, but I never expected that we would get married at such a young age. I knew I would marry him, I moved from Mexico to the U.S. to study with his parents’ help. They sponsored me to study here and fulfill my career goals in January 2018. On November 11th of 2018, Travis told me we would take family pictures for the Christmas cards and that we should match outfits, I chose his favorite color, purple! That morning care and I had not chosen an outfit so I had him run with me into a store downtown and grab a dress that matched his outfit. I put it on, loved it and paid for it. We ran to Uber waiting for us and took us the Adler planetarium which is our favorite city skyline view. Their Bears game was about to start, so Travis made me get out of the Uber in the middle of the highway and run with high heels for a mile!! It was about 30 degrees outside and I was freezing and sweating at the same time. As soon as we got to the edge of the little peninsula, Travis moved my face to face him and told me “It’s 11:11 on November 11.” All I could think is what the hell? Where is everyone for the family pictures? All of a sudden I kept walking and I saw his brother and sister and yelled, why didn’t you guys dress up for the pictures? They started laughing and Travis turned me around to see this huge sign saying Jackie, will you marry me? I was speechless and covered my mouth, started tearing up and told him he lied to me. He got down to one knee and said “Jackie, you are the love of my life and I knew I would marry you just like we talked about right here a year and a half ago. Will you marry me?”
I got down to my knees too and held him speechless. I started sobbing, I cry for literally everything!! I said yes and he put my dream ring on. All I wanted to do at that moment was Facetime my parents and all my family who live in Mexico and tell them about it, but Travis told me to wait until I had a good connection in the apartment with WiFi! So I did. When I got to our apartment everything was decorated with “she said yes,” stuff. I saw pictures of my grandparents’ wedding, my parents wedding, Travis’ family wedding as well.
All of a sudden I heard Travis’ mom call me from the kitchen saying, “do I get to see the ring?” So I stood up and walked towards the kitchen and all of a sudden my mom, dad, brother, and godparents jump from the kitchen and say Congratulations!!! I started sobbing as soon as I saw them and we all ran to high each other, we hugged for like 10 minutes and cried out eyes out! Travis has brought all of the most important people from Veracruz, Mexico to Chicago to celebrate with us our engagement after five years of dating!!! Best day of my life.
Additional info, Travis and I had a long-distance relationship for two years and kept traveling back and forth to be together. Our idea was that 11:11 was our minute, that we would both wish to be together and someday it would become our reality, and it did.
