How we met: I am a speech pathologist, and it was not my regular day to come and work with one of my clients. As I pulled up to the house, I noticed a beautiful, blonde woman waving at me. She clearly thought that I was the client (who had not yet arrived home with the kids), as we have the same car. I rolled down my window and said “I don’t think I am who you think I am!” Nicole, who had been waiting in front of the house for the client to arrive, responded, “That’s OK, I’m just happy to see anyone!” As it turned out, Nicole works with children as well, and she was at the house to work with the sibling of my speech student.
We chatted in front of the house, which overlooks the entire city of Los Angeles. It was a beautiful, sunny, clear day, and one could see the ocean from the view. What was interesting about our very fortunate first meeting was that not only was it not my day to work with this client, but it was also not Nicole’s time to work with the client. The fact that the family was late to get home for our appointments and we were able to meet and get a chance to speak was also pretty special. While our conversation was great, and I immediately liked Nicole, I was not sure if the feeling was mutual. Fortunately, Nicole said something to the client, who was kind enough to connect us. The rest is history.
How They Asked: Nicole and I rented a home right on the beach in Maui with my family. On the morning of July 5th, she told me that she planned a special outing, and that I needed to be ready to leave the house by 7:30 that evening. I, of course, assumed that we were leaving the property of the home. When I was finished getting ready, I noticed that Nicole was not there. My mom then told me to follow her.
She led me outside our house, down a beautiful candlelit pathway that I had never seen before. I noticed, as my mom and sister guided me towards the beach, that there was an arrow lit up with fairy lights that read “Emily” in Nicole’s handwriting.
It was pointing to a more narrow path that was paved by beautiful green plants that led to the ocean. As I got closer to the second pathway, I could hear one of our favorite songs playing from the beach. I knew something extraordinary was about to happen, and tears filled my eyes. The music got louder and louder as I walked closer to the ocean. It felt like I was in a fairy tale.
More beautiful, hand made, wooden signs lined the pathway.
They were all custom created with sayings that Nicole and I share. The last sign read “N (heart) E.”
I couldn’t believe that Nicole created all of this for me. I felt overwhelmed with love for her.
As I walked down what felt like a magical pathway, I could see that the beach was literally FILLED with lights. White paper bags filled with tealight candles were everywhere on this secret beach.
At the end of the lights was a GIANT 7.5 foot teepee that was lit up with more fairy lights. It looked and felt like a dream. Next to the teepee was a projector screen.
The words “press play :)” filled the screen.
My mom and sister stood with me as I pressed play, and a movie that Nicole had made began to play. It was set to another one of our favorite songs, and it began with screen shots of our VERY first text message exchanges. Tears of joy and awe took over me as I watched the beautiful photos and movie footage from many of the special moments Nicole and I have shared during our relationship.
Following the screenshots of our text message exchanges and the photos was video footage of Nicole driving up the beautiful driveway to the home and incredible view where we first met. I couldn’t believe that she had gone back to the house to capture the feeling of our very first encounter. I was beyond moved. This was such a sentimental moment for me because it brought me back to the first day that we serendipitously met…the first day I laid eyes on her. During the last part of the movie, the screen went white, and our absolute number one favorite song began playing.
Words began flashing on the screen in the following segments : “Every day/ since the moment we met/ has been the best day/ of my life/ Emily… /please/ turn around.” Since my eyes had not left the projector screen, I did not know that Nicole was now standing behind me. I was so excited to see her. We held each other as I cried. Then Nicole asked me to turn around again to face the projector screen which now read “will you marry me.”
We looked at each other and Nicole revealed the contents of a black box as she asked, “Will you please marry me?”
Of course I said “yes.”
I knew without a doubt that I wanted to spend the rest of my life loving her. I felt like the luckiest woman in the world.
