How We Met
Emily and I met at a coffee shop after having talked on Instagram for a couple of weeks. It was such a crazy journey! I was closeted and dating a guy at the time in a pretty toxic relationship. Emily brought out every part of me that I’ve always wanted to show, but hid because I was scared. I didn’t know how my family would react to me being gay, or if I would lose friends. But when I met Emily, I literally didn’t care at all. I knew she was what I wanted, and I fell for her instantly. She was everything I’ve ever dreamt of but didn’t think existed. And there she was. We both expressed our love for each other shortly after meeting, then came out to all friends and family.
Emily was kicked out of her church and she lost friends. I received a negative reaction from the family (initially). And it was so hard- but all I was thinking about was that she would be my wife one day, and everything would be so worth it. She asked me to be her girlfriend first at a park by the water after walking around a chilly farmers market with coffee.
I asked her back a couple of weeks later with a Halloween and margarita themed date night. She asked me to marry her on June 27th in the place we want to raise a family. And I plan to ask her back in a couple of months!! Ps, the “Mrs” cup winter photoshoot was done only 6 months into our relationship! We knew we wanted to get married in the future and we just thought the cups were such cute props!
How They Asked
Emily and I have both grown up in the Detroit area and from the beginning of our relationship, we’ve talked about wanting to move to Ann Arbor and raise a family there! Ann Arbor is also where we found our new, affirming church. It meant a lot to us after Emily’s pain with being kicked out of her childhood church. So Emily surprised me with an Airbnb in Ann Arbor- which was just the cutest home.
While I was getting ready, she set everything up on the porch and had our photographer friend there for pictures. I couldn’t speak when I saw everything and how beautiful she looked. I’ve never been happier in my life. She proposed by promising to love me forever, protect me, and always eat 3 dinners with me. We completed the shoot then had dinner downtown followed by burgers and fries in bed (the 3rd dinner :))
