Mary and Lea
How We Met
We met 8 years ago at a summer camp. Lea was working as a lifeguard on staff and I became a camp counselor. Soon I switched to work as a lifeguard and we became good friends through all our time at camp. Fast forward 4 years, and at the end of our last summer working on staff, we started dating.
We then commuted back and forth between New York and Massachusetts while we were in graduate school. We also endured several months apart while I studied abroad in Florence, Italy.
The distance was definitely tough, but it helped solidify the fact that we wanted to live together. After dating for about 1 year, I moved in with her where I lived in the summer and on holidays while not in school.
We then started to settle down a little bit and wanted to expand our family. We decided to adopt a homeless cat and named her Pepper, who has been a great addition!
How They Asked
Our proposal story is unique in that we both planned it at the same time, unknowingly. We both had suspicions that any family trip or date could be the moment as we had talked early that summer about our general plans for the next few years, although we didn’t know any specifics. I was planning to propose to Lea during our weekend break in Lake Placid as I knew her mom and some close family would be vacationing with us. I figured it was perfect to be able to involve her family and there would be someone around to take pictures. I was originally planning to propose out on the frozen Mirror Lake, but Lea mentioned wanting to take a gondola ride to the top of Little Whiteface Mountain and I thought this would be a perfect spot!! It turns out she was thinking the same thing!
While looking out at the beautiful view, she turned to me and asked me to marry her!
After she popped the question, I pulled out her ring and did the same!
Needless to say, we both said yes and are now happily engaged!
