How They Asked
I decided to propose to my boyfriend 8 months before actually doing it. We’ve been together for about 2 years and we both had been married previously for 16 years and then divorced before meeting each other and when we met the connection was instant. Like we were soul mates and we had finally met our match. John had brought me camping in the Adirondacks and I instantly fell in love with it and Lake Placid.
We happened to stumble upon the Lake Placid Lodge and it became one of our favorite places. They have a Hacker-Craft boat and John expressed to me that he always wanted to ride in one so that is where I came up with the idea of proposing on the boat. I told him I had Planned an early birthday surprise for him in Lake Placid to get him up there. When I started planning I couldn’t ask John’s parents for their permission because his mom had passed a year earlier and his dad is in a skilled nursing facility and is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
So I asked his brother for his blessing and asked if we could bring his mom’s ashes to the chapel and have a priest ask for his mom’s blessing and have the ring that I was proposing with blessed. It was the perfect way to get her blessing and it was a beautiful service. So then I hired Laura Pinckard to photograph the proposal. I rented the boat exclusively for us for a 1-hour tour of Lake Placid. When I got John to the boat he was so excited that this was his birthday gift. The boat captain explained that Laura was taking promotional pictures for the Lake Placid Lodge website and he had no idea she was there to capture our special moment. As the boat was heading back to the dock I told John what he meant to me, got down on one knee and proposed!
