How We Met
We met in a metalsmithing/ jewelry class at California State University, Sacramento a few years ago. We made rings, spoons, and other decorative metal objects. I rarely got to speak with her but I was always so captivated by her laugh and smile. We kept in touch on Instagram when I graduated in 2017. On January 1, 2020, Erika surprised me at my doorstep while “New Years Day” by Taylor Swift played on her phone. I stepped outside and she handed me red roses and a note that asked me to be her girlfriend! In the note, she incorporated some of the lyrics of the song and wrote “I want to clean up bottles with you on NYD every year.” I said yes! Little did I know, Taylor Swift would be part of my next surprise…
How They Asked
We slipped away to Bandon, Oregon on September 25, 2020 to enjoy a relaxing weekend on the empty beaches to celebrate my 29th birthday. On September 26, we met up with my best friends and hiked to a lighthouse and then made our way on to the local jetty.
Erika handed me a glass bottle and said, “There’s a message in here for you.” With shaky hands, I opened up the note and read Taylor Swift lyrics, ” It’s a love story, baby, just say yes!” As Erika got down on one knee, she slipped on a ring and I said, “Yes.” The ring is a one-of-a-kind vintage / Celtic creation from our metalsmithing/ jewelry teacher at CSU, Sacramento! I was so happy that the place we met was incorporated into this new chapter of our lives.
