How We Met
Caitlyn and I met in Houston, Texas when I was living there working as a doctor. It took me months to finally get her to agree to go on a date with me. She always said she was always busy working. I didn’t believe her, but after we met, I realized how busy she actually was. We met through mutual friends and went on a first date at a bar. I remember seeing her across the street wearing a cat t-shirt and skinny jeans. She was standing underneath the light pole right outside the bar we were going to meet at. Since I am from Mexico and did not have a car, my friends from work had to bring me. I started to freak out and was so nervous. My friends kept saying “Just go! Just go!” They pushed me and I walked right up to her and gave her a hug. Once we started talking, I could tell it was difficult for her to understand me since I have a Spanish accent. We laughed as I had to repeat everything I said more than once. An hour into talking, she mentioned she was hungry and asked me to reach over to the next table and grab some of the other peoples’ nachos. She was dead serious when she looked at me and asked, so I started to reach over and Caitlyn screamed, “No wait, I just wanted to see if you would actually do it!” After hours had passed, I told her that my friends were ready to go home, which meant I had to leave too. We walked over to the other bar where my friends were and I introduced her to everyone. It was the largest first date I had ever been on. I could tell Caitlyn was nervous, but she had a sense of calm to her. I walked her back to her car one hour later and gave her a kiss. It was then that I knew how much I liked you.
How They Asked
Caitlyn would mention something everyday about getting married and having a life together. Whether it was talking about a ring, buying a house, getting a dog, or where we would travel too with our future children. I knew she wanted to get married because we talked about it all the time. I moved to Mexico for a year for work, and we did long distance. Caitlyn had came to visit me on numerous occasions, and vice versa. She was coming to Mexico City to celebrate my 27th birthday with me. I didn’t think much of it since it was just for a weekend. I don’t really like birthdays, so we didn’t have anything planned besides maybe dinner and drinks somewhere. Caitlyn had planned a photoshoot for us in Mexico City on the morning of my birthday. She said it was so that we could have cute pictures together just for the heck of it. I wasn’t too excited since I had never had a photoshoot before, but I just went along with it. We got up really early and met with a photographer that morning. We walked around different places near downtown and took a ton of photos. We made it near the end of the shoot when the photographer posed us in a weird way where we were facing each other. All of a sudden Caitlyn started speaking in Spanish. She is not fluent, so it was unusual for her to randomly start talking in Spanish. Everything happened so quickly, and before I knew it, Caitlyn was down on one knee and pulled out a ring. She asked me to marry her and I was in complete shock. Of course I said yes! It finally hit me that the entire photoshoot was so that we could get the proposal on camera. We celebrated the rest of the day by exploring Mexico City and having a surprise engagement party!
