how we met
In the summer of 2012 a mutual friend introduced us to each other in Hawaii. We spent time together hiking, practicing yoga, attending summer concerts, stargazing on the beach, etc all season long. It didn’t take long to realize that we enjoyed each other’s company and that something special was developing between us. Four years later, we are excited to announce that we are engaged and looking forward to forever together.
How They Asked
April: I was sure at least 2 years ago that I wanted to ask Am to marry me. She is the most kind, considerate, and loving person that I’ve ever known. She is brilliant and well accomplished. I believe that she can do everything and anything that she sets out to do, to include learning to fly a plane. I had been researching rings for over a year. But, I didn’t want to rush the proposal. I was waiting for the right idea, the right moment. Sometime in late November Am and I were casually talking about how the year was almost over, Christmas plans and present ideas, and even starting to think about New Years resolutions and future goals, Am mentioned that she would like to learn to fly planes someday. Unbeknownst to her, that triggered my planning into full gear and her 1st flight was scheduled shortly after. The rest if the story is in the photos. Even though I was feeling confident that she would would say yes,I was nervous for the entire week leading up to the proposal. I wanted it to be special, I wanted it to be a moment that she would always remember. It was a chance to show her once again how much she meant to me and that I’d always go the extra mile to support her goals and make her dreams a reality.
Am: I was so shocked by the proposal. I had no idea!! Usually, I am hard to surprise, but somehow April pulled it off. It was my birthday weekend so April told me that she has a birthday surprise for me. I thought that I was going to do a fun, secret activity in celebration of my “21st” ( wink wink). As we got ready to leave the house, April handed me an envelope that read “HAPPY BIRTHDAY- Take me with you, But do not open until instructed!” I was intrigued. The wheels in my head started spinning trying to figure out what the surprise could be! When we got in the car, I had to keep my eyes closed the entire ride. With my special envelope in hand, I sat in the passenger seat excitedly with a big smile on my face. Finally, we had arrived. I opened my eyes to find two surprises. One, we were at an airport, and two, it had started to snow heavily. April instructed me to open the envelope that I had been holding so closely. Inside I found a certificate for a Discovery Flight that would allow me to fly an airplane! I screamed with joy. I had been talking about learning how to fly an airplane since we discussed our New Year’s resolutions for 2017. I was ecstatic that April had done the research and purchased an initial flight lesson for me.
Once inside the building, we were greeted by a very friendly guy named Eric who took us in a room to tell us more about my Discovery Flight. I listened to Eric attentively and asked many questions. He shared that “due to bad weather, we would not be able to fly today. However, we can go in the hangar to explore the airplane and become familiar with the gauges and instruments.” Again, I beamed with excitement. At this time, I am still clueless about what was coming next. Eric led both April and I down a long hallway to the hangar. He slowly opened the door and gestured me to enter. As I entered, my eyes opened wide with shock! I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful romantic set up of the most gorgeous vintage pieces– A lovely couch with an end table of stacked luggage pieces, a beautiful vintage lamp, and candles! I stood there in disbelief and that’s when it finally hit me that this was all much more than just a birthday surprise! April led me by the hand, as she nervously expressed her love for me before getting down on one knee.
In that moment, I remember being in complete awe of April! The whole thing – the idea, the planning, the location, the set up, the hidden photographer- everything was like a dream!! This is a moment that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
Being with April, I have experienced the most selfless love! She is an incredible woman who is smart, thoughtful, and naturally good-hearted. The past four years have been the most wonderful years of my life and I am excited to begin the next chapter of our lives together.
