How We Met

Out of high school I traveled from University to University and in the fall of 2011 eventually landed at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) just two hours from my hometown of Jonesboro, AR. Adam transferred to UALR from Baylor University that same semester where we took the same political science class. We sat next to each other in class but Adam swears he was too afraid to talk to me. I have to admit, it drove me nuts!

Later that semester our greek organizations, Kappa Delta Sorority and Pi Kappa Alpha were having a bowling mixer that we both attended. Adam was having people over back at his house afterwards and talked with one of my sorority sisters (Erica) to make sure I was going to be there. We spent the whole night talking and getting to know each other but winter break was coming up. I was going back to Jonesboro and he was going back to Texas so I was hesitant to start anything.

We talked a little over break but it wasn’t until Adam threw me a surprise birthday party back at school that I knew this could be something! We continued dating over the course of the semester and were practically inseparable. Before long it was May and after finals, I was set to move back to Jonesboro for the summer. We decided we would still date and would see each other on weekends until one weekend in particular. On May 17, 2012, I traveled to Little Rock for the Josh Abbott Band concert. That was that night Adam asked me to be his girlfriend and during the song, “touch” he first said, “I love you”.

how they asked

To say that Adam completely surprised me would be a lie. This man gets so excited about everything and cannot keep a secret from me to save his life. But his excitement about life is one of the things I fell in love with. So, I knew that he had bought a ring and was planning to propose but I had no idea of any specific details. January is always a very busy month for us with New Year’s trips, both of our birthdays, and several of our friend’s birthdays. So, when Adam told me we were going to Little Rock for the weekend, I assumed it was for another birthday celebration. We were staying with two of our very best friends (Jordan and Craig) and I woke up to Adam telling me, “Goodbye. I love you and I will see you later.” and Jordan bursting in screaming “wake-up!” with mimosas in her hands. All of this added up to only one thing, Adam was going to propose today!

Jordan and I cranked up the tunes and sipped mimosas over Taco Bell (my favorite meal) while getting ready for what would be one of the biggest moments of my life. So, when she started packing up my luggage I knew it was time. I slipped on my dress, buckled my heels and we got in the car.

Thirty minutes later we pulled up to Two Rivers Park where Adam was standing at the end of a long-paved path waiting for me. I nervously made my way over to him and we began to walk together until Adam stopped me by an Evergreen tree and pulled out a letter he had written. He looked up at me and before he could speak, he began to cry. Now I have only seen Adam cry one other time so this was shocking but also the most special part for me. He began to speak and I started tearing up but I knew I had to keep it together or he would lose it. After he finished reading me the letter, Adam started to kneel and my heart began to race. He said, “I will be here for you through thick and thin. No matter what, I will love you. Heather, Will You Marry Me?” and without hesitation, I nodded and said “YES!”

After a champagne toast, Adam and I headed out for dinner. We walked in to Samantha’s Tap Room & Wood Grill in downtown Little Rock where some of our closest friends and family were anxiously waiting to celebrate. It was the perfect end to the perfect day filled with so much joy and laughter.
