How We Met
Spencer and I met about 4 years ago at Nike+ Run Club in Portland. Being a Portland, Oregon native and a former Division 1 runner, the running community was one that I was strongly involved with. Spencer, a Chicago, Illinois native and also a former Division 1 runner, was the agency lead for the Nike+ Run Club. Our first (and my personal favorite) picture taken together was us doing a workout side by side. We became fast friends, hanging out multiple nights a week during track workouts and easy runs.
We started messaging on Snapchat shortly after he found out through the grapevine that I had a serious crush on him. He asked me out and in his true cheesy form, suggested Valentine’s Day weekend for our first date. We planned on meeting up on February 13th, but had to move our date to the 14th when Spencer got a last minute ask to help some friends move. So our first date was on Valentine’s Day and we ended up going for a run followed by donuts and coffee. Spencer showed up that morning dressed head to toe in pink and red (Valentine’s Day theme) and gave me a bouquet of paper flowers that he had colored and cut out by hand. After a quick run on the trails of Portland, we sat, ate breakfast and chatted about our families and friends – and by the end of the date we were quizzing each other on the 50 US state capitals (all of which Spencer knew by heart – he so humbly showed me). I knew from that first date that this guy was something special. After a series of the best first, second, and third dates, he became my best friend and I fell head over heels in love.
How They Asked
I have never been surprised in my life. I love knowing all the details and being the one to surprise others. Spencer had made it very clear that his one goal was to make our engagement a surprise. We had both been talking for weeks about how excited we were for the Labor Day 3 day weekend to relax and unwind together. My mom had asked me if I wanted to get manicures that Friday afternoon after work to celebrate the end of summer and beginning of school year for her. Obviously I agreed and spent a good majority of the appointment complaining about how Spencer and I weren’t engaged yet.
After my long run for marathon training on Saturday morning, I invited one of my girlfriends over to bake cookies and watch Netflix hoping to have a chill day. Spencer went out for his usual Saturday afternoon round of golf and then to a friends house to watch football that night (or so I thought).
Sunday morning came and I had made plans a while back to go for a walk to get donuts with one of my best friends, Bree, and our dogs. She showed up at my house and off we went on our walk (workout clothes, not an ounce of makeup on and a fanny pack stuffed with dog treats). I noticed that Bree was texting and on her phone the ENTIRE walk. I remember thinking how annoying that was as I was excited to spend our walk chatting with each other. After a 45 minute walk, we finally made it back to my house. I walked in the door to both of our families and a few of my friends all standing in the kitchen holding their phones. SO confused and absolutely in shock, I noticed that Spencer was standing in the backyard with a rose. I immediately burst into an ugly cry and walked into the backyard. Spencer got down on one knee and asked me to be his WIFE! Our life together is filled with so much love, fun, adventure, family and goofiness; I am beyond excited to spend the rest of my days with my best friend.
