How We Met

It all started with a red balloon . . . Matthew and Hannah met when Matthew was playing for and Hannah was interning with the DeKalb County Liners – a collegiate baseball team. Matthew was a pitcher, outfielder and designated hitter. Hannah managed the advertising account and promotional schedule. On July 4th, 2011, Hannah was decorating the field with balloons. Matthew took a break from warming up and asked her for a red balloon. Hannah tied it around his wrist. That night, Matthew ‘friended’ Hannah on Facebook. On Wednesday, May 18, 2016, our story was featured in “The MidWeek” – the general circulation newspaper in DeKalb County. Read here.

how they asked

In late December 2014, my parents, Matthew and I traveled to Anchorage, Alaska to visit my brother and his family. My father had been diagnosed with terminal cancer that October and I knew that this trip might be our last. I did not know, but Matthew had asked my father for his permission to ask me to marry me before we left. On December 31, 2014, Matthew and I had an opportunity to explore Anchorage. Matthew took me to Point Woronzof – a park on the Cook Inlet with views of Mount McKinley. We walked along the beach. We talked about how life is easier when you had someone to share it with and how we had incredible examples in our parents, grandparents and family.

Then Matthew got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I SAID YES! Just 9 days after Matthew and I became engaged, we lost my father. Before we left, I knew that I wanted to share my life with Matthew, but I fell further in love with him in Alaska. He pushed my father in his wheelchair through ice and snow. He entertained my father so my mother and I could take a break. He gave me the gift of sharing this experience with my father. I will always know that my father approved of Matthew.
