Hannah and Jace

How We Met: Technically, Jace and I met my Freshman year (his Sophomore year) at Huntington University in one of our classes. We would make small talk, but nothing really came of it. The following school year, we met again at one of our campus’ largest events. It was freezing cold outside, so he let me wear his winter jacket and asked if he could share the Snuggy I had as well. I agreed and we sat and talked for hours! After that day, I knew he was someone I wanted to get to know better.

We got to know each other over the next couple of months before he asked me out on a date to a hockey game. I knew absolutely nothing about hockey (and still don’t), but I knew that Jace was very passionate about it so I agreed. That night, December 12, 2012, Jace officially asked me to be his girlfriend.

how they asked: It was our two year anniversary, and I was kind of suspicious that something was going to happen. However, my mom kept telling me that he hadn’t asked my dad’s blessing yet (and she’s normally a terrible liar so I believed her), and didn’t want me to get my hopes up by the end of the night. When she told me that, I told myself I would just enjoy the night no matter what happens. Two years is definitely something worth celebrating!!

To start off, we went to the Botanical Gardens in Fort Wayne. It was all lit up and decorated for Christmas so it was gorgeous. We spent some time in each room talking, and Jace had this idea to ask each other questions about our favorite memories for the rest of the night. He gave me two rules: I wasn’t allowed to ask about the rest of the night and I wasn’t allowed to ask questions about the future. The man knows me well. I’m really bad at thinking of questions to ask so it turned out to be him asking the majority of them and answering them after I did. It was still a fun way to remember the last two years.

After the Botanical Gardens, we went through the drive thru at Starbucks, then Jace pulled into this restaurant’s parking lot. Sassy me said, “Why would we get Starbucks and five minutes later go to a restaurant”? He told me to be patient, that we weren’t eating here. So we walked behind the building to see a horse and carriage ride all lined up for us! I have wanted to do that since I was a little girl, so I was SUPER excited about it. It was freezing outside, but we had several blankets and our coffee to keep us warm.

When the carriage ride was over, Jace pulled into the outdoor ice skating rink parking lot. I am an awful ice skater and I was wearing a dress and tights, so I made a huge fuss about it, but was willing to go through with it for Jace. We casually walked by the gates and I looked up at him, very confused because there wasn’t anything else around. He said to relax, that we were just going to take a walk. As we got a little further, I saw lights from this huge bridge peeking through the trees. Every time we drive over said bridge, I tell Jace I want to take a walk on it sometime because it’s so pretty! The lights change color every few seconds so it’s like a mini light show. When I realized we were finally going to walk on it, I grabbed his hand so tight!

As we got closer to the bridge, he looked at me and said, “So I have another question…what are you most excited about for your future?” Me and my sassiness said, “YOU CAN’T ASK ME THAT YOU BROKE THE RULES!!!” He replied with something along the lines of “well I’ll be a rule-breaker then”. I looked ahead as I said my answer and noticed that there were candles lining the sidewalk of the bridge, and even further ahead I noticed rose petals. Jace grabbed my hand and squeezed it tight as we continued walking, and at that moment I realized what was happening. We stopped in the middle of the bridge on one of the busiest streets in Fort Wayne, and in that moment I swear it was just me and him. I don’t remember anything that he said, and I don’t even remember if I said yes. I think I might have just held out my hand for him to put the ring on.

His mom and sister had been taking pictures of us the entire night, and I had no idea! After the proposal happened, he took me out to a fancy dinner…not that I could eat anything. Best two year anniversary present ever!!
