How we met
Living in a small town, everyone pretty much knows each other. So when I say I first ‘met’ Corey when we were 16, that is not entirely true. I had never been properly introduced, but I knew of him and recognized his name long before 16. After all, in our small town he was an athletic superstar, in the local newspaper dozens of times, along with his older brother and father. The name Shinko was associated with greatness, so when I heard that Corey Shinko was going to be playing on our volleyball team for our local church league, I was excited to meet the boy behind all the hype. Having seen him before, I already knew he was super cute so I decided I would play it cool for our first meeting. I was warming up before our game when this tall dark and handsome boy sauntered in. He passed me and said hi, and I said hey. I didn’t think much of it at the time but I later found out that me trying to “play it cool” came off as me seeming mean to him! So much for good first impressions. Anyway, we were half way through our volleyball season when Corey joined our team. He kept coming to all the games after that, and started hanging out with my group of friends. We became good friends and just a few short months later started dating. That first night that I made a new team mate, I made a new teammate for life.
how they asked
It was the summer after Corey’s high school graduation, and my first year of college. It was a beautiful day in august, and we had decided to go out on a date that night. We had a “fancy date” planned, I had bought a new dress and had my nails done, and it was all I could think about all day at work. I was so excited to go out with my amazing boyfriend, my best friend, the love of my life. I had no idea that on that day in August Corey was planning to ask me to be his wife. Whenever we had talked about it, we had always said for maybe another year from when he proposed. So as I got ready for our fancy date i did not suspect a thing. He picked me up all clean shaven and looking handsome as ever, and I thought it was odd that he had long pants on on such a hot day. I had even texted him earlier and told him to wear shorts even though we were going out somewhere nice.
We went to Pineapple Eddies for dinner, a local Caribbean style restaurant. We ate delicious food and laughed a lot, and ended right around sunset. He suggested we drive to the beach, and I was all for it. What a perfect ending to a great date night! Watching the sunset at the beach. When we got to the beach, I was taking off my shoes when I realized that Corey was wearing his sneakers still. “Aren’t you gonna take them off?” I asked him, and he refused! I thought how weird it was that he wanted to walk in the sand in his sneakers and socks. I reassured myself with the fact that he does many many weird things pretty much every day. We walked down the beach a ways past the other people, and found a log to sit on for a minute. The sun was about to set so I wanted to walk up to the water, and Corey told me to go ahead and that he was going to take his shoes off and then catch up with me. After a few minutes he called me back and I walked up to him and he started hugging me and saying sweet things to me. With my head against his chest I could feel his heart beating really fast and his hands were shaking on my back. That moment is when I knew something was up.
I asked him “Why are you shaking so bad?” and right then he got down on his knee and proposed to me. I immediately answered YES because why wouldn’t I want to spend the rest of my life with my best friend?! I later found out the reason behind the long pants, the socks, and the sneakers. The whole night he was smuggling my huge ring, box and all, inside his sock! He also perfectly staged a video by leaning his phone against the log, and it turned out perfect! It was the happiest day of my life – which I am sure will only be topped by the day I get to say “I Do”!
