How We Met
In short, we met over mutual friends and a lot (yes, a lot) of beer.
The longer version is that we met at the perfect time in both of our lives, and really connected right off the bat. Shortly after I graduated from San Diego State University, (where we both went to school, and Tanner had graduated from the year prior), I found myself with a lot of spare time. For the first time that I could remember, I had nothing to do and nowhere to be. Having not started a “real job” yet, I was enjoying some post-grad time with friends just relaxing and having fun.
After graduation, that total nothingness, lasted for maybe three weeks before I met Tanner. It was June 9, 2013, and my girlfriend Tina and I went over to our local Thai restaurant for lunch. While there, Tina invited our friend Richard who brought Tanner along with him.
The funny thing is that Tanner and I had met before – but this was the first time we really truly “met.” You see, we had a lot of mutual friends, and had crossed paths throughout the years, but never really thought much about one another.
There was something about this moment that was so special. Maybe it was that we both were so open to the possibility of romance at this time, and the universe just delivered us to each other when we were most ready to make a connection. Whatever it was, the timing was right and we hit it off immediately. We then spent the next several hours laughing, teasing one another and just having fun (and yes enjoying a few beers). That moment sparked a summer love that never really ended.
We didn’t mean to fall in love, it just happened – and we have been together ever since.
how they asked
Tanner proposed on Maya Bay in Thailand (which was just so appropriate given that we met at a Thai restaurant 4.5 years prior). The proposal day started early like 4 am early as we were headed off for a sunrise snorkel tour in the Phi Phi Islands. Once on the boat to leave for the tour, we were all feeling pretty tired, and a tad woozy from the rocky sea, but we pulled it together in time to enjoy the stunning sunrise over the ocean. Then, we arrived at our first destination: MAYA BAY. Maya Bay is a picturesque beach that was popularized from the Leonardo DiCaprio movie, The Beach. The movie has turned the bay into a very crowded tourist destination, but the beauty of our sunrise tour was that we were able to get to Maya Bay before most of the tourists arrived.
As we arrived on the beach, I clearly remember saying to Tanner something along the lines of “Man, I’m just not feeling like my best self right now!” He acknowledged my feelings and replied, “neither do I, but we need to persevere.” I didn’t think anything of it. I also didn’t think anything of it when Tanner handed our camera to Matt and Kelsey and asked them to get some “b-roll” of us walking. Ok, this might have given it away to a lot of people, but it’s actually not an unusual ask for us, so everything felt normal. But once we were alone, I knew. Suddenly, Tanner was acting a little funny and just sounded nervous. I honestly can’t remember everything he said, but it was something along the lines of how incredible the trip had been and how much he loves me.
Then, he gets down on one knee and asks me to be his best friend forever.
I was speechless. Being speechless isn’t exactly the reaction a guy wants when he proposes. So just to be sure I understood him, he repeated “Will. You. Marry. Me?” I, of course, said YES!
The funny thing about a proposal (at least in my experience) is that you kind of black out a bit. After I said yes, I sort of snapped back into reality as Tanner was trying to place the ring on my hand – my right hand! I was still pretty speechless, but managed to get out the words “I think that’s the wrong hand!” We laughed and then of course hugged and kissed as Matt and Kelsey and the rest of the nearby beach cheered for us!
Once reality struck, I very literally went weak in the knees and had a hard time even standing up.
The rest of the day (and trip for that matter) was just filled with so much love, happiness, and excitement. We called our family and closest friends, and I was surprised to hear that pretty much everyone had known that Tanner was going to propose! The fact that not one person even kinda sorta spilled the beans is still amazing to me.
With the help of Matt and Kelsey, Tanner pulled off an absolutely perfect proposal.
