Haley and Nathan
How We Met: Nathan and I “met” in March of 2013 through a Facebook group. Nathan and I were both going on a college summer mission trip that upcoming summer and were in a Facebook group for all of the other students going. A few weeks before, I had seen his picture on the group and thought, “wow, that guy is cute!” but didn’t think anything of it. In March, I had a message on Facebook from Nathan asking about my major. Nathan and I continued to chat back and forth and eventually exchanged phone numbers. The real catcher is that Nathan was born and raised in North Dakota and I am from Virginia, so we were about 24 hours apart! I never thought I’d be in a relationship with someone across the country, but some things change for the better.
Nathan and I officially met in May at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, and spent the next 10 weeks getting to know each other better!
how they asked: Nathan and I spent a little over a year dating and visiting each other every 2-4 months. This was pretty challenging, as we had spent more time apart than together! In the summer of 2014, Nathan came to Virginia, where we both did an internship at a church in my hometown. At the end of the summer, the internship had finished and I had to get ready to go back to school, and Nathan had to go back home to finish his last semester of school in North Dakota. My family, Nathan, and I went on vacation to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which was the perfect way to end a great summer.
The night we got there, Nathan suggested we go down to the beach and said that my younger sister should tag along. I always enjoyed time at the beach, as that is where Nathan and I had many of our “firsts” (first time meeting, first kiss, first date, first “I love you”) so the beach was a special place for us. Nathan, my sister, and I went down to the beach, and my sister had brought a camera. I was confused, because it was 9 PM and dark outside, but just passed it off. Nathan brought a backpack, which also confused me, but I was just ready to get down on the beach! After walking around a little bit, we all sat down to talk. Before I knew it, Nathan tells me he has something for me… Nathan then pulls a picture album out of his backpack, and it is full of pictures from our first summer together, screenshots of Skype dates, snapchats, and our first conversation on Facebook (thank goodness for technology!), and pictures from all of our visits in between.
Each picture had a little message about the memory, and at the end, there was a blank page that said, “Insert Proposal Picture Here.” My sister had began taking pictures, which is when I started to realize what was happening! I looked at Nathan, and he sweetly asked, “would you mind standing up for me?” with the most handsome smile on his face. I stand up and before I knew it, Nathan is sharing his heart with me about how he loved me and he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me! He then asked me the best question I’ve ever been asked… “Haley, will you marry me?” I was so, SO excited! That was the easiest question I have ever had to answer… YES!!!! We are getting married in June, and I couldn’t be happier to spend the rest of my life with the most amazing man I know.
