How We Met
We met on a missions trip with a young adult group to Tarragona, Spain. In the middle of the trip, a close friend asked me if I liked Max, IN FRONT OF HIM! I immediately responded with a “no” because I was so caught of guard and did not want him to get any ideas. However, he avoided me the rest of the day. I felt so bad that I asked him to talk that night outside of our hostel. We talked for hours on a countryside mountain in Catalonia looking out on the night of Spain. The next day we climbed Montserrat together while the rest of the team climbed up separately.
how they asked
Our Engagement Max and I were celebrating four years of dating. We had been long distance for two of those years until a job brought him to my hometown. The weekend before our anniversary (which was a Monday) I had been stuck in bed. My back had given out on Friday night and I was unable to walk until Monday morning. I saw a doctor Monday afternoon and was given four shots in my back to relieve the inflammation and pain. Because I had been in bed all weekend, I hadn’t given any thought to our plans Monday night. After receiving the shots in my back, I was almost immediately able to walk and move comfortably again!
I told Max we could wait to the following weekend to celebrate so that we could enjoy it since the past few days had been so stressful. Yet, he was adamant that we went to dinner Monday night. He took me to my favorite restaurant in town. We both ordered steak and I should have known he wasn’t feeling right when he only took two bites of his meal. Nevertheless we enjoyed dinner and followed with a walk by the river! Four years ago Max had asked me to date him on the river walk and I agreed reluctantly, knowing that we would be committing to a long distance relationship after only knowing each other for a couple of weeks.
I didn’t know four years ago that we would make it this far. I had never been in a serious relationship or one that was long distance. I think the distance pushed us to work harder for the relationship and gave us a reason to fight for one another. As we walked along the river, we came to the bench where he asked me to date him. He then asked me to dance despite the extreme Georgia heat. He began to say sweet words that although not out of the ordinary felt more anxious at the moment.
Before I knew it, he was on one knee with a ring in his hand. I don’t remember saying “Yes” because he was crying and I was in complete shock! I couldn’t believe that it was actually happening to me! WE WERE ENGAGED! Shortly after leaving the river walk, we returned home where our families greeted us and popped a bottle of champagne.
Max then surprised me with a week long beach trip with both of our families starting the following day! Because his family lives on the other side of the state, we don’t see them often. So this trip was the perfect way to celebrate our engagement, be with the ones we love, and relax!
