Greg and Alexis
how we met
Greg and I met in the summer of 2010 at a friend’s house gathering in our hometown of Birmingham, AL. When he walked in, I stared at him for a while trying to figure out where exactly I had seen this guy before. Unknowingly, we had both passed each other countless times on the plains of our beloved alma mater, Auburn University! We had no idea that we both went to the same university! I thought he was the cutest thing, but unfortunately he had a girlfriend at the time. After about a month passed of meeting one another I decided it was time for a well needed Facebook stalk (because of course Facebook tells all! Lol), which after, I then decided to go ahead and add him as a friend. To my surprise, he instant messaged me and as conversation flowed he told me that he no longer had a girlfriend, so we decided to exchange numbers. Not much happened after that, until it was time for us to both move back to Auburn to begin our second year of college.
We messaged and texted back and forth and met up once outside his dorm, but the true excitement didn’t come until he asked me on our first date, September 8, 2010. He was a true gentleman! He let me choose the movie for us to see, and purposely, I chose a scary one. This would give me a pretty reasonable excuse to snuggle into him if we came across a part that I deemed “too scary”and it worked! We spent lots of time together that Fall, but by the time December of that year had rolled around, things got kind of rocky for us. We quit talking and over the course of the next year and a half Greg and I were no more. We even began new relationships, but I still never stopped thinking about him and would catch butterflies if we walked past each other on campus. He had left such an imprint on my heart and I couldn’t shake it.
By the time our senior year had rolled around we began to rekindle things, partly because we had both joined a sorority and fraternity. I, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and he, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. We saw each other much more frequently because of the social events in which we both participated. Thankfully, God saw fit to bring us back together! Needless to say, Greg and I have enjoyed learning, loving and respecting each other for the past 6 years and because of this, Greg decided to make things official on July 23, 2016.
how they asked
Greg and I knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. We talked about it often enough and after a few years of dating I thought it was about time. I always told him that I would want him to invite all of our family and friends and I once mentioned to him that I would love a hidden photographer. I didn’t even think he would propose this year because he often told me “maybe within the next 16-18 months.”
At the beginning of July, Greg told me that grandmother’s 72nd birthday party was going to be the Saturday of July 23rd. I only knew the location of the party, but I didn’t put to much thought into it because it wasn’t unlike Greg to give sparse details on anything! Saturday was an average day for me, so I thought. I got home from running errands about 5:45 p.m. and by this time Greg had finally told me the party started at 7. About 6:30 p.m. my parents left to go to a wedding reception and my sister left for the movies. Greg finally arrived to pick me up from my house at about 7:15 p.m. so that we could celebrate his grandmother’s birthday.
Nothing seemed out of the norm to me. When we arrived at the botanical gardens we began to walk towards the back of the venue. I had been there once before and knew that they had private event rooms towards the front of the building but following his lead I just kept walking towards the back. As we walked we passed by beautiful roses, it was very romantic. As we kept walking I started to question if we had gone to far and suggested we turn around, and he simply told me, “No, it’s in the back.” We kept walking and I finally see an event room and say, “Oh hey! There it is!” And again he told me no.
As we walked up a small flight of stairs I see rose petals and candles lit under an arbor. I was slightly confused until I realized, THIS IS IT! This was about to be the moment I had dreamed of since I was a little girl. He held me hand and led me to where the rose petals and candles were. We stopped and he began to tell me how much I mean to him and how much he loved me. I started crying.
He continued expressing himself to me, and then he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said “YES!” Immediately after I said yes, I heard cheers and applause. I looked up to see all my family and friends, including my parents and sister who intentionally made up where they were going earlier that day just to throw me off! Surprised was an understatement. I broke down in tears even more!
I looked around again and saw the hidden photographers! I was beyond cloud 9, more like could 19! It was everything I could have wanted and more! I absolutely can not wait to marry and spend the rest of my life with my best friend, confidant, and love of my life!
