Brooklyn and Jon's Gorgeous Malibu Proposal

How we met: Jon and I went to the same high school, and although we never dated we did go to one dance together. He said he always had the biggest crush on me, and the first time he saw me he jokingly told one of his buddies “I am going to marry that girl.” Whenever he tells me that story I smile just thinking, it’s funny how things work out. I am so thankful.

how they asked: It was Jon’s birthday so I had planned a little weekend getaway to celebrate him turning 27. I booked our room at The Ace Hotel in LA, I rented his favorite exotic car to drive around in, and I made a list of cool places to go and restaurants to eat at. We are more spontaneous when we are together, so I figured the list would be just a back up plan. It was his birthday, so I wanted to do whatever he wanted to do.

The night before when I picked up the car, I wanted to make sure he wasn’t going to stop by my house. So I kept asking him all these questions like…

“Where are you?”

“What are you doing?”

“What is your plan for the night?”

Little did I know, he was picking up the ring, and completely freaking out thinking I knew something was up. My sisters did a good job reassuring him that I had absolutely no idea and that I was just acting that way because I was excited about his birthday present. I was so caught up in trying to surprise him and plan the weekend, the thought of anything else didn’t even cross my mind.

He was completely surprised when I showed up at his work the next morning in a white Porshe Panemera. I was so nervous about pulling it off, I was shaking. You would’ve thought I was proposing to him. Although I thought the entire weekend was a surprise, the car was the only real surprise. He had talked my dad into telling him where we were going, so he could plan everything for friday night. Once we got to our hotel, I just went with the flow… letting him have full reign of the car and the cool places all around LA. We went to venice beach (just killing time apparently), and after a couple hours we left and headed to Malibu. We sang the song “Rude” in the car, a song about a guy asking a dad for permission to marry his daughter. Looking back, we both laugh. He played it so cool, and he didn’t come across nervous or anxious in the least bit.

We knew we wanted to get married and had talked about it before, so I thought when the time would come for him to propose that I would for sure know it was going to happen. But I didn’t have any idea what was about to go down.

This picture is before he proposed… we walked around venice beach, people watched, and ate chicken wings. I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen later on that day.

We stopped at a little place called Paradise Cove, and before we left I begged to put my feet in the water. He said he really wanted to drive up the coast at sunset, and since it was his birthday (and since I got the car so he could drive it up the coast) I said that it was totally ok. I think he could tell I was a little bummed about not getting to touch the ocean, so he said there were so many cool beaches along the coast and there wouldn’t be nearly as many people, so we would stop at one of them. I was playing into his plan without even knowing it. We drove up a little further before he said we were getting pretty far and should probably turn around. We pulled off on a “random” beach and parked the car. We were at El Matador beach, where only a week before Jon and my dad had come to scout out exactly how it would happen.

As we walked down the stairs I was amazed at the beauty of it all, and he told me to turn around so he could take a silhouette picture. I was thinking in my head “a silhouette picture… who is this guy!” haha But he snapped it and we kept on walking. Hand in hand we walked up the beach, until we got to the end and turned around. On our way back he said, “go hop up on that rock I want to take a picture of you”. I said you want me to get up on that rock that is covered in water and has waves crashing up on it every couple seconds! haha (That was the rock him and my dad had picked out at low tide).

Luckily I said, how about this one instead, I don’t want to leave here soaking wet. He said “oh ya”, as he laughed, “ok now turn around I want to get a picture of your silhouette”. I turned around and put my arms up thinking, I’ll give him the best silhouette picture ever. After a couple seconds I turned around, and at first I was like “what the heck”… I thought he was on the ground trying to get low angel picture or something. When I realized it wasn’t his phone that was in his hand, but a little black box. And when I realized he was on one knee, and not just kneeling down trying to get a picture, it finally dawned on me what was happened. In tears as he started to propose, I started to cry just thinking “is this really happening??” I jumped down so fast, I was in complete shock! I may have even said a cuss word… thats how caught off guard I was!

How could this be happening.

I get to wear this ring.

I get to marry my best friend.

I was so happy I could’ve just ran and jumped right in the ocean.

He told me, I have one more surprise for you… “I have your favorite photographer here taking pictures of it all.” I started looking around for her, when all the sudden Katie popped out from incognito! Someone pinch me. This was really happening.

On our way to dinner, I started texting anyone and everyone telling everyone the sweet news. Little did I know, he had gotten together our closest family and friends and they were all waiting at the restaurant for us to arrive. It was the best day ever, and it was time to do some celebrating!
