How We Met
On 07.04.2017, Heeyeon and I embarked on a journey to hike the Kalalau Trail, a 22-mile trek across the beautiful ridges of the Napali Coast mountains. Little did Heeyeon know, I had a huge surprise at the end, a surprise neither of them will ever forget. At the end of the Kalalau Trail lays a secluded beach that is only accessible by foot and at sunset, it is said to be the most beautiful beach in the world.
I urged Heeyeon to run the last mile to catch the sunset on the beach…let’s just say Heeyeon wasn’t the happiest. Then, when we finally made it (barely), I quickly whipped out Heeyeon’s favorite wine and poured each of them a glass. As we enjoyed the most beautiful sunset with a sip of delicious wine, I nervously asked Heeyeon to be his girlfriend…and who’s going to say no to that? Now, it has been two great years! The only regret was maybe, we should have brought more water instead of the wine…
How They Asked
Before both Heeyeon and I leave Hawaii for good after a few years there for work, we decided to visit our favorite island one more time. This was the perfect opportunity for me! I knew our story started in Kauai so I wanted to end the chapter there to begin a new one. I immediately booked flights to the Island of Kauai and frantically started to think of the best proposal idea. First thought was to go back to Kalalau Trail and pop the question!
But that’s not how life works, is it? 4 months prior, Kauai was hit by Hurricane Lane, a category 5 tropical storm which destroyed the Kalalau Trail. So I scrambled to look for the next best spot and I found it- a boat that would take us close enough to the secluded beach where I asked Heeyeon to be my girlfriend. But that’s not how life works either… The swells on the northern side of Kauai was so enormous that the trip by boat was impossible.
The next and final location I had planned actually ended up being perfect! I quickly bought Heeyeon a Haku (Hawaiian flower crown) and raced over to Hanalei Pier- a small and abandoned pier where you could see the edge of the Napali Coast. It wasn’t the secluded beach where it all started, but we were able to see what we had accomplished past two years, symbolizing how far we have come together and how much we have grown til that exact moment.
It’s all a blur for me, but this is how Heeyeon remembers it. I got down on one knee and said, “This is where it all started and I want to end it here by starting our new chapter” and opened the ring box. I was so nervous that I actually forgot to ask her to marry me. Heeyeon waited for a few seconds and yelled, “So are you going to ask me?!”… I was now red with embarrassment but somehow gathered myself to say the first words to our next chapter, “Will you marry me?” And she said YES!
