How We Met
We met freshman year of high school at Greendale. Our friendship began in English class where Bill sat in front of me. Every day, I would help him with his Spanish homework before class began, however if you ask Bill his take on this, he says it’s the other way around. We got along so well that at one point, we were separated for talking too much!
Our friendship grew closer as we both moved on to UW-Whitewater for college. During those years, we formed a close bond and came to rely on each other for anything the other needed whether that was help with a project, advice on how to handle a situation, someone to watch a movie with or play volleyball with – so many memories were formed and we cherish those times that continued to bring us together. Throughout our college years, we always had feelings for each other, but never acted on them until the summer before our senior year. We realized that the majority of our hesitation came from the desire to keep our strong friendship intact, however that summer we decided to take a leap of faith and it couldn’t have turned out better!
We were told on more than one occasion, by more than one of our friends at Whitewater, that one day we’d get married and here we are about to do just that!
how they asked
Bill proposed on Saturday, September 5, 2015 after a hike through the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon, Michigan. We were on a long weekend up north where we visit Bill’s Aunt Chris and Uncle Chuck a few times every year.
The weekend started on Friday afternoon, where we stopped in Chuck’s store in Minocqua to say hello. I was scheduled for a manicure as a birthday present from Chris and Chuck at a nail salon a few stores down from Chuck’s shop. After I was done, Bill came and got me and said he needed to tell me something, so we started walking. He said, “Shaun called and told me/asked for my blessing to propose to Michelle tonight.” We were both so excited for Michelle and Shaun (Bill’s sister and soon to be brother-in-law) and couldn’t wait to see how everything played out that night!
I was also feeling a little confused and underwhelmed, as I really thought Bill was going to propose over our long weekend up north – he had been acting a little strange and I believed all signs pointed to a proposal! However, realizing that Michelle and Shaun were getting engaged, I thought there was no chance it would happen around the same time, so we continued on with the weekend as planned.
After hiking 6 miles through the mountains on an absolutely gorgeous day, we arrived at the breathtaking height and overview of Lake of the Clouds. Bill and I were standing around the same spot we found about a year prior, but on this day, Bill got down on his knee and asked me to marry him! We were filled with happiness and excitement, and plenty of tears to go around between Chris and myself!
Bill and I spent awhile taking everything in and truly enjoying the moment before heading back to Chris and Chuck’s house. On the drive back, I was trying to call and text family (which didn’t work to well with the poor cell reception!) and finally got a hold of my parents to tell them the wonderful news. I couldn’t wait to see them in person to tell them everything! Still driving, Chris was having a conversation with Chuck on the phone about whether the rugs were clean and dry, and then kept saying, “Bill drive slower!!!”
When we finally returned to the house and were about to go upstairs to get ready for dinner reservations Bill had made, I heard a car door slam in the driveway. I assumed it was Chuck returning from work until I looked out the window and saw Bill’s dad’s car. Excitedly, and somewhat confused, I made my way to the front door, only to see my dad getting out of the backseat, followed by my mom! Still in shock and awe of the proposal, I was completely overwhelmed by Bill’s thoughtfulness to include our parents on this special day. With our parents and Chris and Chuck, the six of us went out to a wonderful dinner with yet another surprise at the end…cake with a sweet congratulations message on it! Following dinner, we stopped at Little Bohemia in Manitowish Waters, WI for grasshoppers and to continue the celebration!
Bill spent so much time and put so much thought and detail into the proposal and the entire weekend – I was absolutely blown away. It was a weekend that we will always remember!
