How We Met

Andrew and I met at a mutual friend’s 30th birthday party. It was my good friend’s brother and his roommate. He was across the bar when my friend, Maria, noticed him and motioned toward me, “Gianna, that guy has such a sweet face, you should go talk to him.” Me, being sick of the dating scene after several disaster attempts at it agreed he looked cute, but not knowing he was with the same party had no interest in speaking to another stranger for a potential date.

A couple minutes later, the guest of honor’s sister, my friend Danielle, came over to mention her brother’s roommate thought I was cute. As fate would have it, it was the same adorable boy we had just noticed. We eventually got to talking and the sparks flew. Myself being the clumsiest girl around, even fell off a bar stool mid-conversation with him. Completely sober I may add, gravity got the best of me, what can I say. I still stick by the story that he swept me off my feet, literally. After my “adorable fall”, according to him, he still asked for my number and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

how they asked

Andrew’s birthday fell on a Saturday this year, and he insisted we just have the night to ourselves. “We’ll have dinner just us, you pick the place, I’d just really like to be in the Battery Park City area,” he said. I was very excited, we loved that area of NYC, the waterfront had become our favorite place to spend some beautiful days and nights. The day was uneventful. Andrew went to work in the morning, we had birthday cake for lunch and hopped on a 7pm train into NYC. 30 minutes later we were at the restaurant, kicking off his birthday dinner. I thought I was the sneaky one that night. Telling the hostess to bring the dessert with a birthday candle without Andrew noticing was quite a feat.

We finished dinner, and Andrew requested a walk on the water; according to him there was a part of the park we had never seen before and it was a must do tonight. We headed down to the waterfront and leisurely strolled hand in hand across the familiar sites. It felt like home to us. We finally made it all the way to the end. There was a bridge and a raised lookout point over looking the river with amazing views. This was the spot we MUST see. As we headed up the stairs to this look out point I reveled in the beauty of the water and skylines we were in between. All the while completely clueless of what was to come.

We looked out over the water as Andrew told me how he attributes this whole area to me, and hopes maybe we could live there together one day; he was being slightly more romantic than usual. Then that’s when the happiest moment of our lives started. Andrew pulling me close to him said, “I have a confession to make, my birthday isn’t the only reason we are here tonight.” He had a huge grin on his face, and completely unassuming me immediately realized what we were doing there.

With a squeal of delight, and a very loud Oh My God from me, Andrew pulled out the most beautiful ring I had ever seen, and got down on one knee.

I heard the words, Gianna I love you so much, and went blind with happiness.

There were tears, laughter and almost a cease in my breathing. I know there was a “will you marry me?” in those words he was saying, but with all the excitement I barely could keep track.

The answer was a very clear and sure, YES!!! He had surprised me like I never thought imaginable on his own birthday. This was all happening as his friend, Joe (a professional photographer), was hiding in the distance to capture the moment.

The pictures that followed were heart stopping-ly beautiful. The night ended with our families, who were in on the secret plan, surprising me for a celebration afterwards.

The love we felt that night was immense, and I’d like to believe our story is a love story for the books.
